Well, first on our list is Mary Shelley’s classic novel that she had written during 1818. Frankenstein or Modern Prometheus. The story revolves around the student Victor Frankenstein who defied science and religion by bringing a body made up of stolen limbs to life. Setting it to cause tragic events and loss of his beloved. And trying to destroy the monster he had created. This horror novel is a fusion of science fiction which depicts love, friendship and loyalty.
Next, is The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson which was published in year 1886. The story depicts on the character Dr. Henry Jekyll, who has a split personality in the name of Edward Hyde being investigated by a London lawyer and an old acquaintance named Gabriel John Utterson. The story is one of the most psychological horror stories of all time and the very first horror story which fuses with the psychological genre.
Another classic of the horror genre is the one who greatly influenced the modern vampire sub-genre, Dracula by Bram Stoker, which has been published during 1897. The story is about Count Dracula, who is living in a castle in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania. He invited a guest, Jonathan Harker. A solicitor, to talk about some legal issues that concerns the count. At first Harker was treated with courtesy by the count until, he realizes that he was already his prisoner. This novel is a mix of action and horror and a breathtakingly suspense that you guys should read.
Let’s skip to 1954, I am Legend by Richard Matheson. The story is about the world apocalypse due to a pandemic plague that caused the humanity extinction. Robert Neville, the distinguished sole survivor in the story, strives to live in the god forsaken city by hunting inactive zombie-like vampires at daylight and barricades himself inside his house with garlic, mirror and crucifix in the night.
Next is the 1971, The Exorcist of William Peter Blatty. This story has become one of the most controversial novels of all times. For there are rumors that the story is actually based in real life. It is about a twelve-year-old Regan MacNeil who has been possessed by a demon. The story has been critically acclaimed yet it was controversial.
Can anybody forget this story about a girl whose superpowers got berserk? Carrie by the one and only, Stephen King. The book was published on April 5, 1974. This was also his first book. The story is about the title itself Carrie, a shy high school girl who uses her newly discovered telekinesis power for revenge for those who bullied her. Until one day, her own powers turned her down and went out of control, that even the ones she loves has been hurt by her own power. This psycho horror story of King is one hell of a read!
