A Huge Realization

Coming out of the bathroom, you nearly slammed into Jeremy.

"Wha--! Sorry! So sorry!" he apologized, stumbling back.

You insisted to him it was alright.

"Ah... sorry, anyway," he repeated. "I realized I k-kind of needed to pee, so..." he trailed off, assuming you understood why he was here.

You nodded absentmindedly, looking Jeremy up and down. He was incredibly pale, you noticed. And he seemed a little... off. You hadn't seen him in a while, you realized. You patted him on the shoulder and asked him if he was okay.

"Me? I'm fine, I'm fine..." he said nervously. He rubbed his neck and stared at the floor for a beat. You looked at him oddly, and for a moment he met your eyes. He cracked under your scrutinizing gaze. "Okay, maybe I'm not fine," he blurted and gave you a frantic look. "M-maybe I have been h-having a t-t-tough time, alright? No-- It's no big deal, alright?"

You stared at him, wide eyed. You didn't know he was going to freak out like this.

He put both hands behind his neck and started pacing in circles, limp prominent as ever.

"Ugh," he gasped. You were a little worried he might hyperventilate. "F-first I have to work extra hard to support my mom, then I'm t-traumatized by my shitty job, then I lose my leg, and then, then--!" he stopped, suddenly. Stopped speaking, stopped pacing, stopped breathing. You stepped forward and gripped him by the shoulders to ground him.

His breath returned all at once, faster than he could keep up with. "My mom..." he gasped. "Uh..." His face scrunched up and he lifted your hands off of him. He took a glance at the sea of tables behind him and took a glance at you.

He barreled into the bathroom.

Alarmed, you followed him in. Lucky there was no one else in here to see the scene. You looked under the stall doors and saw the familiar sight of his threadbare tennis shoes in the one furthest from the entrance. The largest stall, being the handicapped one. You knocked on it lightly.

"I-I'm pissing, go away."

You told him you knew something was up.

There was silence except for the buzz of the harsh fluorescent lights on the ceiling. You heard the door unlatch, and it creaked open just a crack. You cautiously opened it all the way and slipped inside the spacious stall, locking the door back behind you.

Jeremy sat on the toilet. (Fully clothed, mind you.) His eyes bored into the tile floor between his shoes. "My mom..." he started again. He shifted a little, shuffling his feet. You stepped forward to be beside him, rubbing his back. He sighed again, running his hand down his face. He put it in his lap and intertwined it with the other.

"She passed away," he said. "Not too long ago." He blinked and you watched a few tears fall into the toilet bowl below, rippling in the water. "I guess I'm just-- I'm still mourning, I guess." He sounded tired.

You carefully hoisted yourself up onto the grab bar attached to the wall and sat precariously on it, willing to stay there for a while with Jeremy. You reached forward and grabbed his hand. He briefly looked at you before his eyes flicked away, back to the ground. He didn't make any effort to pull away.

"S-Sorry we took a while, guys... We got s-stuck behind a huge crowd of people. Must-- must be a birthday party or s-something."

Mike looked at Jeremy and you knowingly. You had a feeling he could piece together what had happened, but neither of you were about to comment on it.
