Following the limping Jeremy, you closed the door behind you after stepping out.
"Ugh... okay. I should have told you this in the library, uhhhh..." He gathered his thoughts. "Um... I was thinking. I mean..." He took few more moments to calm his nerves. "Is... hm... is this really your place?"
You asked him what he meant by that.
"Th— this whole murder thing, yunno?"
You told him you couldn't abandon Mike. That just made him more frustrated. You added how he didn't even have to get involved in any of this.
"I know that! You just, errr, seem stressed."
You assured Jeremy you were fine. This was bigger than you, anyway. This was about five dead kids, for God's sake.
Jeremy's face screwed up. "I guess."
You searched Jeremy's green eyes for any answer as to why he was acting this way.
And then his eyes slid down.
Breaking eye contact.
He turned a little pink and started to rub his neck.
"—Ahhh," he stumbled over his words. "M- maybe I should cut the crap... lying to you, and all..." He nervously met your eyes.
Lying to you? What about?
"I mean... I guess you can say I'm 'fond' of you."
Oh. This.
"Um..." He shut his eyes tight and started to rub his forehead. "Yeah. I was gonna tell you in the library, at first, but... I chickened out and-- whatever." He pressed his lips thin. "It— it all started when I first met you actually." He dug his shoe into the carpeted hallway and started to bite his lip. "And then Vincent started dating you... And then Fritz, er, he likes you, too, b-by the the way."
You pretended to act surprised by all of this.
"A-And then Mike. And I guess, I'm jealous."
You were a little surprised by that.
"I mean, it doesn't take a genius to see... he's pretty hot. Like, probably an 8/10."
You suppose you looked at him a little funny because he suddenly turned pink again.
"U-uh," He stuttered. "Sorry, I'm going on a tangent. ...My point is, it doesn't take a genius to see you think he's hot, either."
You shrugged guiltily. Yeah, that was true. You didn't realize it was so obvious.
"Um, I'm not sure where he stands on that, but..."
You told Jeremy he had a girlfriend. Or at least, he did. You weren't sure what was going on between him and Doll anymore, and frankly, you didn't want to get wrapped up in any more of that drama.
"Huh." And that's all Jeremy said.
You also weren't sure where Jeremy wanted to go with this. Did he want to date you? Ask you out? Marry you? Well, maybe not that last one.
You decided to make an ambiguous noise to get him to continue, and much to your pleasure, it worked.
"Er... really, this is all just me being selfish."
You remained silent.
"Trying to pull you away from whatever you're doing... just to get you away from Mike."
You shrugged again. At least he admit it.
Suddenly, the door opened and Fritz poked his head through the doorway. "Hey, do you mind if I use your kitchen?" He poked his thumb back inside the room. "And the food?"
You shrugged again.
"Sweet." And then he disappeared.
Jeremy and you stared at the place Fritz had left behind for a moment.
"Huh... you know I imagined this interaction going a lot worse in my head." Jeremy laughed hesitantly. "I figured something bad would happen. The best case scenario was the one in which I confessed... and then you never talked to me again. The worst was the one where a refrigerator fell through the ceiling and crushed you."
You laughed, too, and eyed the ceiling. You abruptly wanted to get out of the area. You led Jeremy back inside the kitchen.
Fritz was sitting at the table, an open bag of mini tortillas next to him and a bowl full of some sort of meat-vegetable mixture on the other side.
"What are you doing?" Jeremy inquired. "What are you eating? Those don't look like cookies."
Fritz quickly swallowed. "Probably because these aren't cookies."
"What are they, then?" Jeremy asked. You were curious, too.
"Dunno. Some sort of tacos I guess. I'm making them in my mouth as I eat them, see? First, I put the tortilla in..." He pulled one out of the bag and put it into his open mouth. "An' 'den I pu' de' inshides ih." He scooped some "insides" out of the bowl next to him with a spoon and put it inside the tortilla inside his mouth. He swallowed the entire thing in one gulp. "Voila! An efficient way to eat multiple tacos."
Jeremy rolled his eyes. You smiled amusedly.
"I can see your confused expression." Fritz grinned like he had just outsmarted Jeremy in a game of chess. (Which had never happened, but a man could dream.)
"It's okay, I know it's a little too complicated for someone with a simple mind like you to understand." He leaned over the table and tapped Jeremy on the nose. "I was like you once. And then I evolved."
Jeremy crossed his arms. "Yeah, for sure. You might as well be living in 2087, you're so smart, huh?" He leaned over to meet Fritz.
"Yep. I can be like those two guys in that movie... except only one guy." Fritz cocked a brow and looked at something up and to the side nobody could see. "What was it called again?"
"Y-You mean Back To The Future? A-- and they traveled to 2015, not 2087."
"Same difference, dude."
"It's a 72 year difference!"
Fritz looked impressed. "You're good at math."
Jeremy smiled a little shyly. "I think you're just bad at it."
Fritz adopted an bitter expression and sulked off to put (your) food back.
When Fritz finished cleaning he stepped between Jeremy and you. "Well, I've gotta motor if I wanna have enough time to do whatever the hell I do when I'm not around you two," he told you vaguely.
"Uh... w- what exactly is it that you do when you're not around us?"
"Cry. And play video games. But mostly cry."
You figured you could relate to that.
Fritz swiveled in his spot to face the door. "Well, see you, fucks." Then he left.
Jeremy turned to you. "I should... probably get going, too. Um... call me?" He simpered.
It was your turn to blush, now. You cracked a smile at him. Of course you would.
