Doll

The pizzeria recovered quickly from the blow, paying newspapers to keep quiet and getting all of the carpets bleached and the floors thoroughly scrubbed. The place was open again before the work week even started.

Fritz told Jeremy that he should sue the pizzeria, but you argued that wouldn't work because it technically wasn't the pizzeira's fault that Jeremy got shot. Fritz just scoffed at you.

Jeremy would be stuck in the hospital for the next 2 weeks before he could be released. You promised to visit him as much as you could, so that he didn't get bored or lonely. He got paid leave for his injury, so in the meantime, there needed to be a new nightguard for the place. Who other than Mike?

Now the only time you would see Mike was in the mornings, at 6:00, when he left the building.

On Monday, when you left work for the day, you spotted a car drive in to the parking lot. however, you couldn't see who was inside through the tint of the windows. The car slowed to a stop, and to your surprise, Mike stepped out of the passenger side! What was he doing here?

"Y/N! Hey." said Mike. "I was just showing my girlfriend how to drive here, because she's going to be dropping me off and picking me up for work... But then I saw you! So I got out to say hello."

"Oh, you're Y/N!" you heard an unfamiliar voice coming from the car say your name.

You leaned a little to the left to look past Mike in to the car. There, in the drivers seat, sat a woman. Was this Doll? She was obviously black, and sporting an outrageous teased hairstyle, which was dyed punch pink. Her large cat eye glasses sat comfortably on the bridge of her nose and stayed put, for the most part.

"Mikey's told me a little bit about you... but this is my first time seeing what you look like." she offered a toothy smile. she had teeth whiter than the scleras of her eyes and pink lipstick that matched the shade of her hair.

You smiled back, more out of politeness than anything else. She really didn't seem cruel, or rude, and she wasn't even ugly. But she was dating Mike, and that just made you slightly jealous. You're selfish, you thought. But you ignored it.

Mike redirected your focus back on him. "So, do you know what exactly happened? Not even the employees like us were allowed to know, but you might have gotten a bigger scoop."

You retold him a brief version of the story Fritz told you, leaving out all the unimportant details.

"Oh shit, is Jeremy okay?" he seemed concerned, and he actually used the nickname you used for once.

Not really, you told him. But he was alive.

Quickly after that Mike explained how he needed to get home and sleep to prepare for his job that night. You advised him to be safe, and both Doll and Mike waved to you as they pulled out of the lot.

The next morning, you managed to catch mike walking out of the building, waking to a nearby car parked out front; the same one you saw on monday. (You stayed out of sight.) he opened the door to reveal doll. She wasn't wearing glasses this time.

"Hey, cutie." he greeted with a tired grin.

Doll pecked mike on the cheek. "Hurry up and get in, Mikey, it's cold out there!" she waved him in.

with no further conversation mike took his seat in the passenger and slammed the door shut. the car drove off and you watched it grow small in the distance. you refrained from thinking about doll any longer and instead thought about the hundreds of tiny children you would have to herd around that day.

you pinched the bridge of your nose and made your way in to the building, albeit a little more stressed than before.

the interaction between doll and mike happened every morning when you came in for work. Sweet names are exchanged, mike gets in the car, and doll drives them both off.

but on friday, days after that interaction in the parking lot, you saw mike come out of building after shift and greet doll, who was in the car to pick him up, like usual. he opens the door, like usual, and starts to get in, like usual. but unusually, doll, who was looking down at the pedals on the floor, looks up to make eye contact with him, and speaks.

"Baby..."

Mike, understandably, seems a little concerned. "yes, darling?" he asked, reprehensibly if anything.

"we need to talk."

"Is this about the job? Doll, I-!"

"No! stop! You can't keep doing this to me, Michael!" doll leans forward, pain imminent in her eyes. her finger tips are pressed against her chest. "you can't keep doing this to yourself! It's like you don't care about anything! This, on top of your parents... I..." she trailed off, facing Mike but gazing to the side.

Mike stays silent and unmoving, still hunched over looking in to the vehicle. you can't see his expression from your position.

"Mike... we need some space. I can't keep doing this.

"Baby-!" he cuts himself off with a strangled cry. he can't think of anything else to say.

"It's not you, it's me. Or... maybe it is you. I don't know, Mike! I don't know what to do! This is all so stressful! I can't handle it!"

"Stressful on you? What about me! Why is everything always about you! You know I'm fucking risking my life— and for what— just to make you a buck? Maybe I'm the one who can't handle this right now!"

"Michael!" Doll is nearing the point of tears. "That's not what I meant!"

"That's what it sounded like."

doll whipped her head away and there was a painful silence.

she rested her hand on the steering wheel. "I'll drive you home, but then you need to leave." she doesn't look at him.

"Are... are we breaking up?" all the steam has blown away and now Mike has realized what happened.

Still, not looking at him, "We'll see how things turn out."
