"Spare his life and I will give you the stone." Dr Strange handed the time stone over to Thanos amongst the destruction of his mansion and half the street. After glimpsing all the possible options in the time continuum, this was the only one which even gave them a chance of survival.
It would require a major sacrifice. It would seem like the end to everyone involved. He had seen the man who made the sacrifice and though he knew very little about the man, his actions surprised Strange. But Strange was the sorcerer supreme, it was his job to protect this timeline and dimension as well as all alternate timelines and dimensions. He was the best to ever do this job.
"Excellent choice." Thanos took the time stone and then he disappeared.
The silver surfer had returned to earth with help as promised. The guardians of the galaxy, Starlord, Gamora, Nebula, Drax, and Mantis arrived just before Thanos came for the time stone.
Those two bothersome teens had shown up a few days earlier and refused to take no for an answer. Dr Strange thought about dropping them off in a large forest in upstate New York but then decided to take a little side trip to Wakanda to collect their responsible adult instead.
"No way." Stark shook his head after Dr Strange appeared through one of his portals. "The country is preparing for war here. I'll stay here and watch out for Vision with Black panther and crew. The kids got you, wizard."
Strange raised an eyebrow. "You're charges are back at my mansion. I'd think you'd want to watch out for them. After all the time stone is a target too."
Stark sighed. The truth was, between the fire power of Hulk, this new Thor and Storm, he probably was needed back in New York. This wizard was powerful but he didn't seem like much of a warrior. Though Stark really was enjoying this East African weather. Dammit. He slid his sunglasses back on and looked over at Rhodes. "You stay here and help out Cap. I'm headed back to New York to save the day as always."
Strange rolled his eyes and then stepped back through the portal followed by Iron Man.
That was six hours ago. Now they were completely and utterly defeated. Stark nearing death as Thanos skewered him with his own blade. So Strange exchanged the time stone for Iron Man's life.
"Did we just lose??" Starlord demanded.
"Why'd you do that?" Stark asked Strange desperately.
"We're in the end game now." Strange replied vaguely.
