Chapter 17: the broken pieces

With the gala only hours away all of the board members, apart from Cristina and Meredith who were both in surgery doing a heart and liver transplant. Ridley decided to head down where to the gala was being held after her shift was finished. She quickly got changed into a pair of blue skinny jeans, a white embroidery tank, a pale red men's sweater and a pair of knee high brown boots. She knew that she was going to have to do her hair for the gala so she just let it out of its braid which left it wavy and natural in a way that she couldn't do on her own. She could that the usual suspects such Jackson and Owen were hard at work where as the others like Derek and Mason were idle standing next to a couple of tables discussing something. The room so far was looking amazing, there were fairy lights everywhere. There was some wrapped around the banister as you can down the stairs, there was light coming from the ceiling, there was even lights in bowls on the tables acting as centrepieces. It made the whole thing seem magical. Ridley was admiring their hard work when her uncle Jackson noticed her

" hey pretty girl, what are you doing here?" He asked wondering if she was here for her own reasons or if she simple wanted to sneak a peek

" honestly I came down here to see if you need an extra pair of hands but I see that you're almost done, it's looking amazing" she said taking one more look around the room p

" yeah it's looking alright so....have you got a date for tonight?" He asked hoping she would say yes, it would lessen the blow that he had to give her

" no I was going to ask this guy Nick who I went out with a few weeks back but I'm not ready to for all that again so... No I'm flying solo tonight" she said sadly although it held some comfort to her that she wouldn't be the only one, Chris still didn't have a date

" what about Matt? Don't you guys usually team up together for this kind of thing?" He said remembering when they were each other's prom date in high school

" yeah but I gave him a free pass, he wanted to ask Katie so I let him. I figured one of us deserves happiness right?" She said not really wanting an answer

" I need to tell you something and I need youto not be mad at me" he said hating that he was one the one breaking this to her

" go" she said always ready for unhappy news, it seemed like that was the only kind of news that she got these day

" Masons bringing a date with him tonight" he said looking down at his shoes, the last thing he wanted to see was her big sad Bambi eyes

" oh who?" She asked severely hoping it was someone she knew and would have to see constantly while pretending to be nice to them

" her name is Daisy, she's a doctor at the hospital although she's not surgical. She works in the dermatology part of the hospital" he said thinking that made it better for her

" wow so he's into skin girls, great" she said without really thinking, she knew it was her fault that they were apart and that he was dating other people but it didn't make it suck any less

" I just figured that someone should pre warn you so that you're not caught off guard tonight" he said knowing for experience that Greys didn't do well with sneak attacks

" well now I'm glad that I'm on call, the hospital needed back up people in case something happened tonight so I told them to page me if they needed an extra pair of hands" she said realising that thing might happen for a reason in some twisted way
