Chapter 11: lost to the world...Part One

Despite the fact that Ridley's heart began to beat again she was not out of the woods yet, Miranda was still unsure what would happen as a result of the amount of blood that she lost during her surgery and now there was an added worry that she could have brain damage due to the lack oxygen that her brain lost while she was dead for several minutes. Therefore Owen and Miranda decided it would be best just to close her up then closely observe her for any change, whether it would be good or bad. There was also a risk that the internal bleeding could begin again, for now everyone had to play the waiting game till they found out more. Once Ridley was taken to her room, Derek stood outside while watching the nurses set up the machines that were now responsible for keeping his little girl alive.

"I want in on her case Owen" Derek demand once he realized that she might need an neurosurgeon, sensing that the chief of surgery and his best friend was standing next to him

"You know the rules Derek, family members are not aloud treat other family members" Owen stated simply, already half expecting a fight from one of his oldest friends.

" Ridley needs the best neurosurgeon there is which just so happens to be me...I know why that rule is in place, because for doctors to give their patients the best care they can they need to leave all emotion out of it. But with family that's harder to do. " Derek said trying to make his case as why the rules should be bent for him

" Derek that's your daughter laying in that hospital bed! There is nothing simple about this case okay? Everything is really complicated... but I can't deny that she needs the best so alright you can check her out, but please if I say jump then you say how high and if I say back off you have to listen..." Owen begged him but wasn't all that sure what he was asking from him other than to be him and to do his best

"Thanks Owen I really appreciate it" he said giving his friend a hug to show him his gratitude and relief that he had something to other than worry about the fate of his family and his baby

"But there are some conditions to this such as you keep me update to with every little bit of information you find out and that you don't this on your own" Owen said handing him his phone with a phone number already typed into it, a number that Derek was all to familiar with

Derek silently thanked him before Owen began to walk away to check on his post surgery trauma patients. Derek turned to look through the window that looked into Ridleys room, he couldn't get over how tiny and weak she looked in the bed hooked up to all sorts of machine that she had come to rely on to help her stay alive. He slowly enter her room and his eyes automatically looked at the small cuts and bruise that has had started to form on her arms from the impact of the car. Derek's eyes finally settled onto the small scar on her arm that was now white and smooth, a tell tale sign of that a cut that had happened a while ago. He could remember that day as if it happened just yesterday ...

Flashback

Derek was doing a complicated procedure on a patient who had been suffering from sever headaches that had been caused by a large tumor pressing down on her brain. Derek was just finishing off when suddenly he heard a sound so familiar yet so terrifying. It was the sound of a young girl crying, although it was slowly turning into a scream of pure pain. It took him a while to realize why it sounded so familiar, the cry belonged to his daughter Ridley who was no more than six years old. He quickly passed his tools to the nearest scrub nurse and then ran out the door as he followed the scream down the hall where he saw a small group of doctors and nurses who must have come to see what all the noise was about. One of the doctors who had come to see what was going on was Richard Webber who considered the small girl the closest thing to a granddaughter. He managed to calm Ridley down enough to her picked up from the floor and quickly grabbed a bandage that was lying on a tray near where they stood.
