We Never Saw This Coming

Chapter 22

Zayn's POV

        After Harry got rid of Luke, an eerie silence has swept over all of us. Harry's sitting beside Niall holding his left hand and I've been staring at how pale and lifeless Niall looks. Finally after a few minutes of silence, I speak up. "How are you feeling Niall?" Niall holds his stomach and says "I could be better Zayn. I could be a whole lot better to be honest." Niall starts to make gagging noises and immediately a nurse runs into the room and places a bucket under Niall and he pukes blood into it. I see Harry trying so hard not to lose it and I'm feeling the exact way that Harry is right now.

5 minutes later.....

        Niall has stopped puking and his doctor has just come into the room. "Hello boys, my name is Dr. Thompson." He shakes both Harry and I's hands. He turns his attention to Niall and asks him "Hey Niall, how are you feeling?" Niall sighs and says "I could be better doc. I've been vomiting blood a lot and I'm feeling pretty weak to be honest." "On a scale from one to ten, can you rate your pain for me?" Niall holds his stomach again and says "I'd rate my pain a 10." I can feel my eyes starting to water up. I glance at Harry and he already has tears falling down his face. Dr. Thompson motions us over to where he is standing. "Zayn and Harry, may I speak to you two in the hallway alone?" Harry and I follow him into the hallway to listen to what Dr. Thompson has to say.

        "Zayn, Harry, I know you guys are wondering what is wrong with Niall." Harry and I both nod at the same time. "Well a little while ago, I ran some tests on Niall to see what's causing his stomach pains and constant vomiting of blood." Dr. Thompson sighs and proceeds to say "I'm sorry to tell you this....... but Niall has stomach cancer." Harry then completely loses it and cries on my shoulder. Tears start to fall down my face too. I wipe my tears away and ask the one question I need to ask. "Dr.Thompson, does Niall know that he has stomach cancer?" Dr. Thompson sighs again, this time it comes across even sadder than the first one. "No Zayn he dosen't and I don't know to tell him." Harry then speaks up and says "I'll tell Niall." Dr. Thompson looks at Harry and asks him "Harry are you sure you want to be the one to tell him?" Harry nods and says "Yes". "Okay Harry, you can be the one to tell him. I have to go check on other patients, but I'll be back to check on Niall later. See you later guys." Harry and I wave at Dr. Thompson and head back into Niall's room. I don't think I'm going to be able to be in the room when Harry tells Niall the news. 

        I decide to go for a walk for a bit and call Liam and Louis. Harry told me that they're currently hanging out at Liam's house. I dial Liam's number and he picks up on the second ring. "Hey Zayn, what can I do for you lad?" "Liam can you get Louis and put the phone on speaker?" "Is everything okay Zayn?" "No it isn't." I hear Louis in the background, which means the phone is on speaker. "Guys I've been hiding something big from you for the past 24 hours. Niall is in the hospital and he's really sick. Harry had to bring him to Bradford hospital yesterday." Liam and Louis are silent. "Are you guys still there?" "We're still here." They both say in unison. "Well Niall's doctor came in a few minutes ago and told Harry and I some very bad news." I can hear Liam's voice trembling when he asks "What's wrong with Niall?" I stiffle back a sob and tell him. "Niall has stomach cancer." I can hear Louis and Liam both crying and another round of waterworks occurs for me too. Louis grabs the phone out of Liam's hand and says "We're on our way. We'll be there soon." "Okay Louis. Okay Liam. See you guys in a bit." "See ya Zayn." I end the call and head down to the lobby to and wait for Liam and Louis to show up. There's no telling what condition they're going to be in when they get here. I'm scared to find out.

I know that this was a pretty intense chapter. It was certainly the hardest one for me to write so far. Anyways, hope you guys like it. :) -Mary
