"Who is she?"
Newt looked up from the children's books he was searching through for Y/N. He dragged his eyes to the little one staring at the picture of a woman smiling on his desk as they held Niffy.
"Her name's Leta. Leta Lestrange." He responded, returning to flipping through the pages.
"Her name sounds strange." Y/N said matter of factly.
He smiled at their joke, even managing to chuckle a little. "I suppose so. She was a strange girl too, but so was I."
"Did you love her?"
Newt dropped the small book he was holding suddenly, causing Y/N and Niffy to almost jump a foot in the air.
"Sorry," he apologized. "it's just...it's difficult to describe."
"Why?"
"I haven't seen her in years, and she's just always been..." He trailed off.
Y/N tilted their head. "She's been what?"
"Troubled," Newt replied. "I've gotten the feeling she was a bit unstable. But, there wasn't anything I could do about it."
The child didn't understand it one bit; not that Newt was expecting them to. So, Y/N looked back at the frame, and smiled.
"She's pretty."
A remorseful smile pulled onto his mouth. "Truly."
"When did you meet her?"
"At Hogwarts, I was in Hufflepuff, and she was in Slytherin. Two very different houses, but I like to think she was my first friend." Newt smiled at the memories of the two of them. From sneaking off into the Forbidden Forest together, to the quiet moments of them doing homework in the library for hours on end.
"Which house was prettier?" Y/N asked.
Newt was snapped out of his memories, and turned to them. "What?"
"Which house looked prettier?"
The man glanced down at the child with a perplexed look, then laughed. "No, not an actual house. It's just another word for some sort of group or family you might say. Remember?"
They looked off into space, then recited when Newt had told them the other day. "Gryffins are brave, snakes are cunning, ravens are smart, and Hufflepuffs are good at finding things."
He nodded, smiling. "Exactly. Except, the Hufflepuffs' animal is a badger, and Ravenclaw's is an eagle."
Y/N simply stared at him. "Why isn't it a raven?"
The magizoologist puckered his lips. "I can't answer that."
"Why?"
"Because I don't know." He answered, turning back to his desk, organizing the children's books alphabetically.
"You don't know?"
He turned over his shoulder. "Yes,"
"But you know everything."
Newt shook his head, still smiling. "Not everything."
"But," Y/N spoke with disbelief. "you're smart."
"So are you."
They scoffed. "I'm dumb."
"That's not true," He moved away from the table to sit by them as Niffy ran out of their arms. "everyone is smart in their own way."
"What's mine?"
"What about you tell me?"
"I'm not smart."
