We slowed a bit and I began to fidget in my seat. Nate glanced at me and I knew to stop, I sighed as we rolled up to the little gap in the road block and a female officer stepped over. She wasn't all that pretty, and that brown jacket over her tan button down made her look like a plank. She motioned for Nate to roll his window down with her skinny hand and looked in.

"Hey fellas."She smiled, wrinkles pulling at the edges of her eyes and the corners of her mouth.

"Whats the problem?" Nate asked calmly.

"Car accident a ways up." She gestured. "There were also some illegal substances found in a house and we are collecting everything we can find."

"Is that why there were all those vehicles heading up?" Nate asked.

"Yeah, I just need to do a quick search of your trunk and back seat and you guys can go on your way." Her voice was like rough sand paper, it hurt to hear.

"Alright."Nate nodded and reached for something under the steering wheel. With a pop the trunk opened and she went on her way.

I leaned over to see what she was doing through the back window. I couldn't see her too well but she spent some time back there before she slammed the trunk shut. She then shined her flashlight into the back area of the car and with a click it was off. I looked foward and she was at Nates window again.

"All clear."She winked at him and stood straight,  she nodded to a guy and we were allowed to pass.

Nate drove off slow, and once we were far enough he picked up speed. I heard him sigh and I looked at him.

"Drug busts and an accident." I said.

"This town is pretty special." He muttered.

"So are we really going through with it?" I asked.

"Do you want to?"He replied.

"Sure I guess..but I do need a few things." I answered.

"Alright."His grip on the wheel tightened.

"I'll run in, I'll fight my parents and lock my door. I'll grab what I need and sneak out."I said thinking of a plan.

"I'll be behind your house. If anything, run." He sounded anxious.

"I promise this will work. It will be us and the open road."I smiled a bit.

"We won't need anyones acceptance." His grip loosened on the wheel as he got off on the exit into town.

"It will be just us."I placed my hand lightly on his knee.

"Okay.."He sighed and the rest of the drive to my house was done in silence.

I looked out the window, taking in all the sights. I know I'll miss this, I know I'll miss my privileged life and I'll regret leaving my mother behind but its what I have to do. I smiled a bit when passing a few houses, seeing some of the happy kids playing in their yard. I hope they never have to go through something like this. Yet when the road turned and i started seeing the nice victorians, I took a deep breath and my knees felt weak. How could I do this? To my mother, she didn't deserve this my father sure but she was a kind gentle soul. I guess sometimes you do have to make some sacrifices.

Yet the moment I saw my house, my heart dropped and I felt like i was about to commit a crime. As he slowed and put the car in park he put a hand on my shoulder.

"You don't have to."He whispered, his breath on my ear sending a shiver up my spin.

"I do..its the only way we can be together and not be ashamed of who we are. I never knew or even thought i was gay, but when i met you...you filled a hole thats been burning in me for years. I can't lose that." I muttered and opened the door, he kissed my cheek and I got out.

"Goodluck hun." He said and I shut the door.

I took a deep breath, set my shoulders back and walked up the path to the door. I knocked on the door hard, and it creaked open.

"Child!"Mable screamed in joy and hugged me tightly around my hips.

"Mable...I'm sorry." I whispered and unwound her arms and went inside.

"Who is it?"My fathers voice was hoarse, not angry something else.

"Hes back."Mable shouted and ran into the kitchen.

"Mable stop." I sighed and I saw my father coming down the stairs. His hair was a mess, dark circles under his eyes and his usually neat suit was untucked and not neatly pressed.

"Nate.."He started walking towards me and I backed up.

"Don't. ."I didn't want to be hit, not now.

"Son."His voice became stern and I just pushed past him and ran upstairs.

I went down the right hall and snuck into his study, I avoided his book case and went quickly to his desk. I glanced at his computer screen saver, a picture of him mom and I at a family picnic a few years ago. It felt like a thousand, I shook my head and went into the second draw to the left. I pulled it open with some force and found a couple thousand bucks, my dad was always too cheap for banks. He always hid his money here and there and had a bank account with a little bit of money just for show. I stood and stuffed the money in my pocket, when I stood I quickly walked to my room. I looked around and grabbed my travel bag, tears brimmed my eyes as I stuffed what little clothes I had and a pair of sneakers. I then went to the bathroom for some toiletries and looked once more around, I smiled a bit at the bear I had as a child next to a family picture on my nightstand. I quickly walked over and shoved both into the bag and left, shutting the door and wiping away the tears. As I made my way to the stairs I saw my dad, he seemed different.

"You're running away.."He whispered.

"Yeah." I said.

"You have money?" He asked.

"Yeah...I took-" He cut me off.

"Good... I'll tell your mom that you love her. I understand why you're doing this." He sighed. "I want to stop you, but I don't want you to resent me anymore then you do. Just remember,  I love you son."

"Thanks. I..I love you too dad. Maybe I'll visit in a few years." I lied and looked down.

"I'm sorry. "He said.

"Me too." I went downstairs and out the door. As Mable was yelling my name but I kept walking, down the path to his car.

This was my new life.
