Through The Ice
Chapter Nine: Escape
I laughed at myself out of pure happiness. I have hope, I have hope, I repeated over to myself in my head. I smiled at Evan and jumped up. I sprinted towards him and wrapped my arms tightly around his waist. "I love you." I said and felt his hands fold around my body. He was shaking a bit. "Love you too sweetie pie."
I kissed his cheek and said to Crystal, "Can you move this thing up? You have to get closer to the ice."
"What do you mean 'you'?" Rosalie asked and lifted one eyebrow.
"I mean you." I replied and dived back out into the water. Shaping was hard, or that's what my friends always said. I've never really given it a gander, you know. I decided on practicing blowing air out of my nose instead of keeping my hand there the whole time. I'm probably going to need two hands to shape the ice. Dad taught me how to blow the air from my nose, but I've always preferred doing things my own way. Hmm, I guess backstabbers are good for some things. I ace this blowing air thing easily.
The ice was very close by and I reached it easily. I tried to remember the things the book said. They could shape ice just by wanting it bad enough- or something like that. Okay, I guess I'm not on the highest level of shaping yet, but I am wanting this more badly then you'll ever know. I try a different tactic. I move my arms the way I want to move the ice. I put my hands together and freely draw them apart and make a circle with my hands. Some people think of ice as hard and cold and solid, but I focused on thinking of it as just snow- soft and cold, but inviting- and I think of it as melting and slowly opening up- as if I were a little fairy girl who made a ball of snow and left an open gap where the snow had lay.
I didn't even notice I've closed my eyes, and when I open them, I see the ice crack and break and pull away. Soft snowflakes moved from a tiny dot to the sides, and the opening grew bigger. The snow heaped up around the edge of the opening and became solid again.
I saw the bubble go to the opening and I dashed toward it. "Now listen," I yelled to my friends. "Here is what we'll do. Crystal keep the bubble thing going, you will be last. Stephanie, exit the bubble when I say so and go up, you're first." I eyed the opening and the frozen piles at the sides of the opening. I lifted my arms straight in the air and dropped my hands forward. The ice- precisely in front of me- collapsed down and made a little pathway. "Stephanie, clear the pathway please." Stephanie diced out of the bubble and swam up, she climbed out and gathered winds around in her arm, and then she blew away the silver snow flakes to clear the ice with it. "Rosalie, non slippery ice," I ordered and watched as she swam up and let soft grass grow on the ice. The two fairies stepped onto it. I kept calling names and telling them to do little things that might make it more bearable up there in the human world. "Tawny, warm" I said as I saw my two friends out there clutching their arms and shivering.
"You two," I said to the boys and watched them go up and sit on the grass with their clothes dripping wet. "Crystal, go." I smiled at her. It was she who made this escape plan better and foolproof. Without her I couldn't have done it.
She broke the bubble and swam up. The water spills into the free air now and the pressure and force pushed me down. I gulped a few sips of water. I started frantically swimming up and thrashed through the water. Finally my head peeked up above the water and I took deep breaths of delicious air. Two hands are held out above my head and I take them. Dean and Evan pulled me out and helped me stand on the grass. Tawny began clapping her hands and the rest followed. Why? Well, I don't know why.
I love my friends. I wanted to go over and hug them and tell them 'We're free, we're free!' but Evan lifted me off of the ground and after swinging me around in the air he lay me down on the grass and kissed me in front of everyone. "Why the sudden attention?" I whisper to him. My voice sounded husky and our lips brushed when I talked- that's how close we were, even after Evan broke the kiss. He smiled and I brought my head up just another millimeter and kissed him back, a long, rich kiss that I wished could've lasted forever. Time sucks.
"Ah-hum!" Rosalie fake cleared her throat loudly. I snickered mid-kiss and Evan drew back. He stood up and pulled me back up. "You did it, congratulations Tori." Stephanie congratulated and ran her fingers trough her long black hair.
Everyone began talking and just a little while later we froze. There were voices, one of them high pitched and probably of a little girl, and the other sounded rougher and deeper- a man. Surely humans would kill us wouldn't they? I was sure it was humans. They were a whole other race, much like ours, who could talk and invent and learn. They were just different in other ways. I climbed up the pile of ice and peeked over the white surface of the ice. I had thought right- heading this way was a little girl dressed in a thick furry coat and next to her walk an old man with a long black beard. They talked and hadn't noticed the random heap of ice here. "I read about a glamour, I believe I could pull it off if I tried." I said to the others as I slid down the ice and stumbled on the grass.
"You guys turn this all back to normal okay? No grass or warmth in this spot." I ordered and started thinking about glamour. It hides the truth from humans- gives an appearance of one. I just imagined myself quite bigger and with normal blonde hair. My silver hair would have been distracting, I believe.
I shiver as I open my eyes. I'm human size and I'm still wearing my outfit. It's freezing! I tried to make a handbag with my glamour and I got it right. I scooped my friends (and boyfriend) up into my hand and placed them into the handbag. "Shhhh," I warned and stood up. I peeked down and saw that the grass was gone. That means the rest should be gone too- the heat I mean.
"You there!" The man called and I looked up. I had not been able to fix the hole in the ice yet. "Uh," I answered. I've never spoken to a human before, it was distracting. To think, they actually look like that. They don't have abilities or wings and they're so big!
"You're pretty," The little girl said, she looked innocent and had blue eyes and soft brown hair falling over her shoulders. "Why thank you," I said in my sweetest voice.
"Will you be my friend?" She said. "Umm, okay." I answered.
"Are you lost miss?" The man asked. "I believe so, would you mind showing me some directions Mr..?" I begged and batted my eye lashes (which I kept very long).
They still hadn't seen the opening in the ice. "Don't be silly," The man said, "Look at how you're dressed. Come with us and have some dinner, you must be tired and cold. And you can call me Ruben, and this is Polly." He said it sternly and I couldn't figure out why. Strange creatures. They turned and walked back in the direction they came from.
I clutched my arms to try and keep them warm. I followed a few feet behind them. I dropped my arm and let it dangle, then I made my fingers straight and I made my hand into a fist. The ice heaps clumped together and sealed the ice once again. There was no trace of where we had gotten out.
I peeked into the hand and put my index finger on my lips. They seemed mesmerized by how I looked and freaked out too. Everyone nodded. I was still getting used to these long human legs, but I liked it. They were swift and fast, and every time I tried to flutter my wings to keep them from freezing and getting stiff, I had to swallow my giggle. I don't have wings anymore silly, I say to myself in my head.
I folded my arms tighter around my body and concentrated on where I was walking. The ice was slippery and I stepped very carefully. "C'mon." The little girl- Polly- yelled from far ahead. I've gotten behind.
"Yes, I'm on my way." I said more to myself than her and tried walking faster. I lost my balance and slipped on the wet ice.
Maybe this won't be the fairytale I was after. Or maybe...I'm an Ice Pixie right? Wow, I'm stupid. As I walked I froze the ice before I stepped onto it. Shaping it when I was so big was so much easier! I picked up speed and didn't slip again.
Or maybe this was going to be a breeze.
