Shao Fei rushed into highschool, just as the bell finished ringing. Barely breathing, he barged through the main doors, down the grey hallways and up 2 flights of stairs.
'Damn, this place needs a lift,' he thought as he pounded into Maths class, 3 minutes late. His teacher frowned disapprovingly as he stood by the door panting.
"Mr. Shao Fei, late again." He marked Shao Fei's name in red on the register.
"And what's your excuse this time?" His teacher wore a small grin on his face as he asked; despite Shao Fei's tardiness and lack of organisation, he was a friendly and willing student, beloved by all, teachers and students alike.
Shao Fei nervously ran his hand through his hair.
"Uh... Sir... You see...." he mumbled, looking around the room at all his friend's amused faces, a cheeky smile growing on his cheeks.
"For some odd reason, last night I just couldn't sleep! There was this paper in my room, full of numbers and lines I couldn't understand. Oh yes! It was your homework sheet! I had to stay up late completing it and I woke up late this morning as a result." Shao Fei's eyes twinkled as the entire class burst into peels of laughter.
"Is that so? Let's see your homework paper then." The teacher put his hand out expectantly and tapped his foot. Shao Fei rummaged nervously through his bag.
"I left it at home," he lied sheepishly.
In all honesty, Shao Fei was late because, after stopping for ice cream, he helped a little girl get onto the right bus and safely home. He knew he was going to be late, but the poor girl seemed so lost and sad.
"You'll stay behind at the end of the day to complete it then. Please sit down now and open your text book." Shao Fei groaned, he hated detentions and always seemed to be getting them.
All the seats in class were taken except for one in the far back corner. He shuffled towards it, inwardly wishing he could start walking backwards, when he saw who his seatmate was.
Tang Yi.
Meekly, Shao Fei slid into the chair beside him, trying hard not to breathe.
Tang Yi was daunting. He was tall and muscular, through his tight sweaters you could see his hard muscle lines. He had white glistening skin; dark, black hair that was gelled back perfectly; a sharp, square jaw and cold, icy eyes. His nose was perfectly sculpted and his lips were plump and fresh. Shao Fei gulped his saliva down and stared at the table in front of him. Tang Yi was very popular with the girls, every day he would get gifts on his table with love letters and girl's numbers. Herds of desperate girls chased him during lunch.
Yet, he managed to remain shrouded in mystery, in a sort of darkness and chilliness that made Shao Fei shiver. He never dated anyone, always rejecting the girls politely and no-one knew who his family was, or where he lived.
Most importantly, no-one dared start trouble with Tang Yi. The previous Monday, a cocky senior had tried to trip him over during lunch and was sent home dripping in pea-soup, squashed french fries and melon, with bruises under both his eyes. Tang Yi never got involved in other people's fights though, keeping to himself and his dark exterior. Tang Yi was not to be played with.
"Shao Fei!"
Shao Fei jumped out his skin and his daydreaming.
"Yes teacher!"
"Where is your textbook?" The teacher asked impatiently.
"Uh, I left it at home." Shao Fei sighed in embarrassment.
"Share with Tang Yi."
"Uh sir, that's ok sir....I'll just guess." Shao Fei stuttered.
"Guess??" The class giggled but also seemed to be sympathetic to Shao Fei, all of them understanding his terror.
"Yes sir. I'll just...."
Suddenly Shao Fei felt a book slam into his arm. He took the textbook and attempted to smile gratefully at Tang Yi who had already turned away.
"Th...thank you," he managed to squeeze out.
During class he shared Tang Yi's textbook, both of them working silently side by side. Only once did Shao Fei's blood rush uneasily again, when accidently he brushed Tang Yi's fingers when trying to turn the page. Tang Yi's hands were cold and hard. Shao Fei looked up at him for a second, before shyly looking away.
Shao Fei's stomach gurgled. He was hungry after all his running and nerve stimulation. He eagerly looked towards the clock and lunch time, waiting for the bell to ring.
Finally, the bell rang and he grabbed his belongings as fast as he could, fleeing the class. He thought he could hear a low chuckle, but when he turned around, Tang Yi's face was solid and unchanging, like a rock.
But then again, he hasn't ever heard Tang Yi's voice, so he wouldn't know.
