"Hey Cy, would you maybe wanna sit with me? Y'know, for the trip there and all?"

TJ scratched the back of his neck shyly, his cheeks dusted a light crimson.

Cyrus beamed with enthusiasm, a whole bus ride with his best friend! Admittedly, he also happened to be his first real crush since Jonah, his first ba boom ba boom ba boom since his failed interest, but no one needed to know that, especially not TJ.

"Of course Teej! I call window seat!"

And with that, he dashed ahead of his taller friend, catching up to the flow of students loading onto the pasty yellow school bus, looking back expectantly for his companion to follow him.

TJ chuckled, jogging to reach his now seat-buddy.

The whole time they were waiting in line to fit onto a bus, Cyrus spoke excitedly about the itinerary of the day, his words flooding out of his mouth and jumbling over themselves in his rush of thought. The entire eight grade class was having their graduation field trip to the museums in the city, and Cyrus was absolutely ecstatic about getting to see the dinosaur skeletons at the natural history museum, the first stop of the day.

When the duo finally stepped onto the vehicle, Cyrus saw an empty space towards the middle of the rows, sliding across the padded seat until his right shoulder bumped the glass of the window lightly. TJ slid in right next to him on the cushion, knocking his tall knees into the seat in front in the process. Cyrus giggled airily at the funky posture the lengthy jock was forced to assume.

"Heeyyy!" TJ jested playfully, knocking his shoulder into Cyrus's, "You try being almost six foot in eight grade! At least my feet reach the floor!"

Normally, a statement like this would hurt for Cyrus, but the twinkle in the blonde boy's eyes sent messages of care, not snide. So he laughed his bubbly laugh, swinging his feet back and forth in amusement.

The engine of the bus roared to life, and with a jolt, the kids were off towards their next adventure.

The boys watched out the window wistfully, watching as the trees blurred into cement on the highway.

For a while, they kept busy by playing 'I spy,' which Cyrus always won because whenever it was TJ's turn he would chose something adorably easy like the sun or a particularly large cloud.

About a half hour into the trip, once the noise of excited tween chatter had died down, and the two had tired of their games, they retired to just staring out the window again, losing themselves in thought.

It had been weeks of tireless flirting, and Cyrus still had no idea how TJ felt about him.

The other day at clay club he had even mustered up the courage to ask if he liked anyone. The question was innocent enough, so when TJ turned into an absolute tomato after saying "yes," he wasn't sure what to make of it.

His hand twitched slightly in his lap. Oh how he wished TJ's hand was there to hold it, weaving their fingers together effortlessly. And that's how everything felt for Cyrus, effortless. With TJ, he didn't have to apologize for his every move, didn't have to force laughter. With TJ, Cyrus was free to just exist as he was, free to be happy.

He sighed quietly, mourning the loss of a love that in his eyes, never was.

And then a rather strange anomaly occurred. He felt a palm slip into his, slowly curling its fingers through the gaps of his own, one... two... three.. four, and a thumb pressing against the space between his knuckles.

Effortlessly.

He turned to face the owner of the hand entangled within his own, cocking his chin slightly and raising an eyebrow, a glint in his eye.

TJ smiled warmly back at him, a rosy blush decorating his freckled features.
