The heat was stiffening. Sunshine streamed through the dusted windows, heating every surface it kissed. It was the last day of school, and the kids were all gathered in a circle around two desks pushed together with a Life board game balanced in the center.

Amber and Andi sorted through the colorful paper money, while Buffy and Marty filed through the house and job cards. TJ was putting color figures in everyone's respective cars and passing them around, while Cyrus worked meticulously to put every small pearly plastic building piece in its labeled place.

Once Andi finished dealing out everyone's starting money and all of the cars were lined up at the start, the kids took turns spinning to see who would go first. Marty spun a ten, claiming the first move in the game. After him they agreed it would go clockwise, Marty to Cyrus to Amber, followed by Andi to TJ to Buffy.

Marty spun a six, starting the game. He landed on a college loans square, groaning as he handed a pastel 5,000 to a smug looking Amber.

The game continued rolling, everyone was cracking jokes and passing money back and forth, having a grand old time.

A little while into the game, it was Andi's turn and she landed on the choose a career space. When she slipped out her three choices, she pretended to think about her options, scrunching up her face before breaking into a knowing smile and passing two cards back to Buffy, flipping the third around to reveal it was the doctor card.

"Hey! That's not fair, you don't even want to be a doctor! You just chose that because it has the highest salary," Amber whined, crossing her arms with a teasing smile.

"You're just mad you didn't think of it first," Andi retorted, grinning giddily.

As they continued to pass through their career paths and onto the romance stage of the game, Buffy and Marty both moved past the marriage milestone block, placing their respectively gendered spouse pieces in their cars.

It was TJ's turn and he spun short, landing on engagement instead of marriage. Sure, he got a life card and all, but he really didn't want to fall behind in the game and lose his lead.

Then Cyrus spun a seven. He slid his car casually onto the marriage slot, reaching lazily across the table to pluck a blue spouse piece out of the bag. He plugged the small plastic peg into his car and looked expectantly at Amber to take her turn. As she moved to spin the number wheel, TJ cleared his throat, looking up at Cyrus with raised eyebrows and rosy features. Then he just blurted it out. There was no disgust behind it, just genuine shock.

"I didn't know you were gay underdog."

"Oh... heh... yeah," Cyrus smiled back sheepishly, scratching the base of his neck, "I guess it just never came up in conversation."

He didn't look up at TJ, didn't see how red his cheeks had become. If he had, he would've seen his friends fire truck face, seen the nervous sweat beading at his brow.

Amber and Andi's turns passed, and before he could chicken out, TJ was reaching for the spinner and he landed a perfect five, meaning it was his turn to "get married" and put in his spouse piece.

His hands shook slightly as he pinched onto the small figure, pressing it quickly into his car, trying to mimic calm. When he retracted his hands, he revealed the piece in place next to his own, the blue spouse piece.

"Oh, you too eh?"

TJ looked up at Cyrus shyly, his face flushing even more before responding.

"Yeah..... surprise?"

Blushing profusely, he raised his arms into a shy jazz hands.

Cyrus smiled lopsidedly at TJ, seeing him in a new light for the first time.

TJ returned the gesture, relaxing his shoulders and his eyes glinted with appreciation.
