The sun had just begun to dip below the horizon, painting the sky with sweet hues of cotton candy and lavender. Children ran across the baseball fields and surrounding grass, shrieking and taunting in sugar fueled play. Parents sank comfortably into their worn lawn chairs, sipping celebratory beers and munching on various fruits and grilled meats.
The hill looking over the local high school football field held the same festive summer energy. Teenagers sprawled across the grass on blankets and towels, some talking excitedly with their friends, arms gesturing wildly in the air in story, while others leaned back into the ground sipping crackling soda and indulging in the tranquility of the summer eve.
All of the colors of the night swirled together in a wonderful rainbow of sights. The pastel hues of the sky, the vibrant greens of the surrounding trees and fields, and the red, white, and blues of the festive townspeople.
It was the Fourth of July in Shadyside, and everyone had gathered at Jefferson High for the annual spectacle of the town's fireworks show.
The good hair crew and tow bounded excitedly down the the pathway to the football hill, excited to end their perfect day off on an explosively good note.
Andi and Buffy took the lead, skipping and spinning in circles in excitement in their summer dresses and glittered faces. Amber and Jonah followed close behind, poking fun at each other about some corndog incident from earlier that to them was oh so funny. And bringing up the rear was Cyrus and TJ, trying desperately to keep up with their energetic friends as they carried the loaded cooler and unnecessarily heavy blankets.
The group made it to an empty patch of grass towards the top of the unofficial "teen" hill near some trees and set up camp. They all spread the blanket out like a parachute, giggling and running back and forth under it before eventually setting it down on the ground.
They all sprawled out on the vast spread of fabric, tossing their bags towards the top and tilting the cooler onto the blanket's edge for balance.
Andi gasped suddenly, reaching for her bag with a mischievous grin plastered to her face.
"I forgot I brought sparklers!" she exclaimed, pulling a small glossy box of the explosive sticks out of her pack.
Everyone in the group eagerly reached out for their share of fun, taking turns lighting the small fire sticks and snapping candid pictures of each other.
When TJ and Cyrus lit theirs up, sparks quite literally flew between the two friends as the sticks crackled to life, highlighting their faces with a warm glittering light.
"Oh this is too cute! Lean in for a photo you two" Amber squealed with a wide smile on her lips.
TJ casually draped his arm across Cyrus's shoulders grinning widely as the smaller boy leaned into his chest, beaming brightly at the cell phone in front of him as he tilted his sparkler towards that of his companion.
With the flash of a bright white light that sent the boys sputtering and blinking profusely, the photo was taken.
"Jeez Ambs! Maybe warn us next time if you're gonna use the flash!" TJ chuckled heartily, turning to Cyrus to examine the shocked look on his face.
"You could've blinded the poor fellow!" He exclaimed, tipping his quickly dying sparkler towards Cyrus's nose, illuminating his face with the golden glow of the small firework.
"Hey! Be careful where you aim that thing!" Cyrus shot back playfully, swatting TJ's sparkler away with his own.
"Awww, you two look adorable!" Andi squealed, leaning over Amber's relaxed shoulders to catch a glimpse of the freshly captured photo on her screen.
Both boys merely chuckled dismissively, shooting each other shy smiles backed by fiery blushes.
As the sparklers burt out and the sky continued to darken, the group began to settle down and adjust their focus to the field below and the sky above in anticipation of the color show to come.
On the slanted hill, the three girls sat snuggled up towards the bottom of the blanket giggling to themselves as they flashed each other silly photos on their phones and cracked nonsense inside jokes. Jonah laid to the side of them with his hat draped over his face and his hands behind his head in a scrapped attempt to doze off. Then, scrunched up at the top of the blanket between the cooler and the pile of bags sat TJ and Cyrus, who were quietly conversing about the day past, leaning in slightly on each other's shoulders and gazing up at the sky.
"...and thank you again for inviting me to tag along today underdog, I've had the best time ever."
"Of course Teej! I couldn't imagine this day without you, I'm really glad you could make it."
The two boys leaned their sides in closer, giving in to the tension of their magnetic pull towards the other.
"Ooooh! The fireworks are about to start!" Andi exclaimed excitedly from down below.
Cyrus looked up at TJ, beaming from ear to ear. His eyes lit up when the taller boy returned the smile, and he bowed his head slightly and brushed his forehead against TJ's shoulder, not losing his goofy grin.
When he lifted his head back up to face his green eyed companion, his cheeks burned red at the sudden proximity of their faces.
TJ chuckled softly, smiling with his eyes.
He paused for a moment, his eyebrow twitching up in curiosity. Without a second thought, he surged forward, latching his freckled lips onto those of the blushing boy below him.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The first fireworks of the night illuminated the field as the two boys moved their lips together to the rhythm of the explosions in the sky.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
TJ broke the kiss first by smiling into it, leaning his forehead forward and his lips back, prompting Cyrus to do the same.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Cyrus giggled softly, stealing another quick kiss before re-angling his body to lean into his beloved, feeling as his comforting arms pulled him onto his lap.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
TJ warped his arms securely around the smaller boy's torso, hugging him tightly to his chest and kissing his cheek softly.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Both boys relaxed into each other's embrace, bringing their gaze up to the explosions of color above them.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The sky was filled with a rainbow of sparkling fireworks and fizzles, each more magnificent and elaborate than the last.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
But nothing could compare to the beauty and ferocity of the fireworks going off inside the hearts of the two young lovers intertwined on the grassy hills under the stars and stripes of the colorful sky above.
