A Twist of Fate - A Half a Mile Away
I watched as he skipped rocks across the small lake. 1-2-3-plop!
Frankly it wasn't really a lake, more like a large pond. A really large pond, with lake-like qualities.
I didn't notice James looming over me. "Lucy!" he whispered, "I gotta go hide!" he twitched his head to the left and sure enough he had a reason: every possible snob was exiting a truck. Melissa: cheerleader cap-i-tain and president of the S.L.U.T. Society. Rob: the jock/asshole/retard. Kaylie: the S.L.U.T. society's VP. and Natalie: plain old BITCH.
James darted off into a nearby weeping willow and climbed to a really, really high spot.
I shifted positions on my rock and watched them from the corner of my eye. They were coming closer.
"Hey everybody." Melissa said. "Look. It's the orphan." Melissa and co. laughed.
I kept looking out at the lake/pond.
"Hey. Look at me when I'm talking to you bitch." She pushed me off the rock and onto the ground. Again laughter.
I stood up and brushed myself off. I stook for a minute and then I looked her dead in the eyes and said, "Fuck. You. And the dick you rode in on."
"Oh look the little orphan can talk." She smiled and then slapped me across the face.
I turned right back to her. I couldn't see it but I knew my cheek was red from a mixture of her hand and the tempature, which dropped a good three degrees when we got to the lake/pond.
"Here's a little tip. Next time you plan on hitting me." I stopped for a second then clenched my hand into a fist and punched her across the face. "Punch."
She stumbled backwards a bit and looked genuinely stunned. "You fucking skank." She went to slap me again but James had come down from the tree and started calling for us-- well them technically.
"Hey everybody!" He rubbed the back of his head with his hand.
Melissa's face brightened and she said, "Oh! James! Hi!"
I continued to look at the ground. James look me up and down and said, "What the fuck are you doing with her?"
Melissa made a face of disgust. "Ugh she thinks she's so fucking cool." She shot me a glare and turned back to James. "Maybe you could teach her a lesson!"
James looked at me and said, "Like how?"
Melissa and co. looked at each other for a minute then Natalie shouted,"Throw her in the lake!"
Everyone agreed with shouts of various 'oh yea!' s and 'do it!'
James just smiled. I looked around with wide eyes.
He said," Alright." He came over and grabbed my arm, dragging me towards the lake.
I saw Melissa and Co. smiling.
James didn't lip a word of apology. He just turned me around and pushed me in.
I fell into a drop-off and the chill of the water immediately sunk in. I couldn't move and it quickly became harder to breathe. I tried moving towards the shore but I was so cold my entire body was numb.
I head James' laugh followed by Melissa's and the rest of Co.
"Okay let's leave now. It's real cold here." Melissa mockedat me.
I heard the truck start and speed around the corner into town. I started to feel pressure in my chest and I couldn't breathe. I heard footsteps and I saw James come over, pull me out of the water and fall backwards. He hugged to me tight and apologized over and over.
I started breathing heavily and shivering. I felt warm tears run down my cheek. I started to say, "You were gonna leave me here." but I only got to 'gonna' before I lost my breath.
"No I wasn't." He breathed into my drenched hair. "I wasn't I promise I would never leave you here I promise I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry..." He rocked me back and forth.
As I started losing conciousness I heard him singing in a whisper: "Blackbird singing in the dead of night.... Take theses broken wings and learn to fly....All your life.......You were only waiting, for this moment to arise....."
Then my tiredness overcame me.
