A Twist of Fate- Wish You Were Here (Today)
As we approached the top of the hill we lost speed and pierced the surface of the water. I climbed onto the side of the hill, which were almost mountains because of their height. I pulled Cat up and looked around. Thetown sure enough, was just over the hill. I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. Water was running through a small dip in the hill and down towards Citi at a rather fast pace.
"Cat." I pointed. He came over and looked at the growing stream.
"This cannot end well. We have to warn Citi. If not..." Cat jumped over my feet and charged down the side of the hill. "Well, we might have another Terrine."
James. I couldn't let his fate, Terrine's fate, happen to any others. I raced down the hill, faster than Cat and into the Citi gates. In my rush I forgot about Cat. When he got to where I was I picked him up and cradled him in my arms. He began to protest aloud but I warned him of the crowd around us. He kept quiet as we rushed inside the gates. I've never been in a city, so the skyscrapers intimidated me a bit.
I looked at Cat. "Where do we go?"
Citi Police.
I nodded and headed to North Citi.
Citi was divided into five areas, North, South, East, West, and Gate. Gate is the entrance to South Citi, South Citi leads into either West Citi, which leads to East Citi, then North Citi. North Citi is the richest part of the Citi districts, probably because of all the shops North Citi owns in West Citi. West Citi is the next richest. All the store owners get half the profit of the stores from North Citi. South Citi was a medium rich district run entirely by the Feds. Now East Citi, is completely uncontrolled by the Feds. Nothing good can ever come of that place. At least that's what my mom always said.
After about an hour of wandering through abandoned alleyways and the torn up streets of East Citi, we finally reached the entrance to North Citi.
I looked around. There were three or four people in sight at the least, then I noticed it was because of the police station down the street. I thought it was still a bit risky to talk to Cat in the open so I went behind a dumpster, which was abnormally clean and said, "Okay,Cat, we're at the station, but I don't know if they'll let you in."
He dropped from m arms and said, "You're probably right. I'll wait here. You go in and warn them."
I said, "I..... Are you sure?"
"Yes. Nobody will bother a cat."
Before I could respond Cat hurried into the darkness. I watched him for too long, appearently, because I heard him hiss 'Go!'.
"Oh! Sorry." I got up and entered the station.
It was plain white with desks scattered about.
"May I help you?"
I jumped and turned. A woman stood at a podium-like desk.
"Oh uh. I'm sorry. Yes." I placed myself in front of the podium, pinching my arm whenever I wanted to run. "I'd like to... How to say it..... Report? A potential problem to Citi."
The woman said, "What kind of problem?"
I pinched myself. "A flooding problem...."
The woman's eyebrows raised, in shock or disbelief I couldn't tell. She said, "Please wait here." She left to a door in the back that read: Police Chief- Jerrie Reynolds.
Pinch.
A rather tall and built man came out of the room with the woman. They exanged words and he approached me. "Hello I'm Captain Reynolds. Would you please sit?" He gestured towards a chair next to a metal desk. I sat down and he sat in the chair across from me, grunting slightly.
Pinch.
His voice lowered a bit, as if to be gentle. " So, a flood?"
I nodded, "Yes."
He sighed. "You must've imagined it. The waters of the Ukrin have long since dried, a flood is impossible now."
Pinch.
I took a deep breath and said, "Until recently, it was. But an extreme downpour in my hometown, Terrine, has cause both it and the Merli Plains to flood greatly. This may also be a problem for Citi.." Deep breath, pinch, "This may be a problem for Citi because a small dip in the hills seperating Citi from the Merli has allowed much water to flow into this providence and towards Citi at a high pace, growing faster each moment we waste..."
Captain Reynolds still appeared scornful.
Deep breath, pinch. My voice raised slightly, "Growing faster each moment we waste discussing whether or not I'm telling the truth." I stared the captain head on, I did not intend to back down. "My entire town already drowned because of this flood, I don't wish the same fate to happen to yours as well."
"You.... Girl, Citi will not flood, you have no proof of this and--."
I stood up abruptly. "Follow me if you want proof." I walked out the door and whistled for Cat. He came running up and climbed my arm onto my shoulder.
Well?
Before I could answer the captain walked out of the building and said, "If you have proof, take me to it."
I stared at him for a minute, a mixture of happiness and determination filling my body.
"Come on then." I walked about thirty feet before glancing behind me. Sure enough, Captain Reynolds was following close behind, mumbling under his breath.
