"What the hell did you do to my sister?" Dustin had opened the door, curious as to who was knocking, because the people that knew what was happening at the Byers' wouldn't have had to knock. On the other end of the door was Steve holding his unconscious sister in his arms. "I told you to pick her up this morning, not assault her this morning!"
"First of all, not funny, considering how it happened. Second of all, I didn't do anything to her." Steve set her on the couch, pulling the blanket over her and grabbing a Coke from the fridge, popping the cap off with his teeth. He left to buy a beer after telling Nancy to go with Jonathan, but found Jade instead, which he ruled more important than alcohol.
"Well, what did happen?" Lucas, Mike and Max followed close behind, all asking the same question as Dustin, but with different words.
"Look, man, same as Billy, I can't say. If you don't know, you don't know. I only found out today, it's her business." His hands dug through all the frozen foods in the freezer in order to find an ice pack for the new burn in her arm.
"You were with Billy?"
"Wait, why were you with my step brother?"
"Why were you with him?"
"Why was my sister and you with him?"
"Yeah, I was with him, but it was fine, alright? It was for Jade, regardless of whether I agree or not."
"What does her step brother have to do with my sister?"
"Dustin, don't worry about it. Priorities, kid, priorities." Steve manoeuvred through the kids surrounding and bombarding him with questions to get to the still unconscious girl.
She looked peaceful, but, in her head, she'd been stuck in a never ending loop of every moment that caused her the most pain. Altercations and arguments. Losses and her worst fears come to life. Every memory and moment that scarred her, forcing her to build a wall to protect herself from being traumatised and hurt again.
"Wait, please tell me Billy didn't do this to her." Fear rose into Max's eyes as soon as she even considered the idea that he could and would do something like that.
"No. It wasn't. But, in a way, he's responsible. So am I."
"Just tell me what the hell is going on, Steve!" Blood had started boiling in his veins as soon as he saw the condition that his sister was in and he finally cracked after receiving nothing but unfathomable answers, leaving him in the same confusion as when Steve had arrived.
