Obi and Obiefune returned to the house hours after spending time together. The children were outside seated on the verandah each with stones, bowls and heaps of palm kernel. Chukwudi and Chioma were also seated busy with shelling the palm kernels. They would pick a kernel use a stone to crack the shell by hitting it hard , then they'll fish out the seed and place in a bowl.
The children had barely filled their bowl whereas Chukwudi had almost filled his to the brim. Chioma's bowl was half filled and chukwudi seemed to be making fun of her. The children were laughing together with Chukwudi and Chioma.
Chioma had held Chukwudi's hand so that he wouldn't shell more palm kernels.
Obiefune and Obi met the laughing crowd and Obi was surprised to see Chukwudi and Chioma because they barely spoke to each other. He eyed the two suspiciously before Chioma sprang to Obi's side.
"kee ebe unu gara? Where did you go to? I've been looking for you"
We went to talk" Obiefune replied promptly. "I thought you weren't coming out today"
Chioma eyed her brother before walking to her heap of palm kernels. "You want boredom to kill me in that house abi?"
Obi sat close to ifenna and Oluebube who seemed to be struggling with their own kernels and started shelling with them.
Obiefune finally turned his eyes to Chukwudi and after their long staring contest, Chukwudi finally spoke.
" nnọọ! "weldone
Obiefune nodded and sat close to Tobe who was focused on his task that he didn't acknowledge anybody's presence.
Obi noticed the tension between Obiefune and her cousin Chukwudi and it amused her. Obiefune must have been upset with the way Chioma and Chukwudi were cozy.
His attitude towards Chukwudi was rude and Obi felt irritated by it. He was playing the big brother when he was just kissing her few hours ago and she was Chioma's age mate. The whole act made him a hypocrite.
"Chukwudi when is your mother coming back? " Chioma began, pulling everyone's attention to her
" She will be coming back tomorrow or next, I'm not too sure " Chukwudi replied appearing tensed
" When she comes back tell her that I'll come and learn how to make that Nkwobi I ate today" Chioma smiled and Chukwudi returned it.
Obiefune glared at both Chukwudi and Chioma before Obi decided that she was fed up with his attitude. Chukwudi is her cousin which means Obiefune should also be courteous around him not throwing him death glares like he stole his yam.
"Obiefune I chọrọ Iṅu mmiri? Do you want water? " Obi said standing on her feet.
Obiefune tore his eyes from his sister and Chukwudi and turned to face Obi who was shooting daggers at him.
He was not thirsty but he understood that the look she was giving him meant that he needed to drink that water irrespective of whether he was thirsty or not.
Obiefune stood up and brushed away fibres of the palm kernel off her his body and followed Obi.
When they got to the backyard she stopped and faced him with her hand on her hip and a very angry face. Obiefune did not let Obi speak before he began talking
"Gịnị? What did I do now?"
Obi only glared at him still maintaining her posture
"How will I know what I did if you don't tell me?"
"I don't like talking when I'm angry, you should know that" Obi replied in an abrasive manner
"You're angry with me and you won't tell me why you're angry because you don't like talking when you're angry and I'm supposed to do something about it so that you won't keep being angry at me, when I have no idea what is making you angry in the first place . Why are girls so complicated? Oo chim" Obiefune rambled with his hands in the air
