Kairi POV
Lending the speed of my wolf, I raced outside, pulling Zane along beside me, his hand still held tightly between my own. Thinking it would take too long to go down the stairs, I did the next best, if highly stupid, thing. Bracing myself, arm held over my head, I jumped out the window. The glass cut as it cracked and shattered.
Turning my body mid-air, I wrapped my arms around Zane’s muscular body in a protective embrace. He wouldn’t be able to respond to anything until he transforms.
It was the first time I thought about how strange our shared powers were.
Landing the jump easily, I ran into the forest. Reaching the lake holding my past’s pain, I stopped, letting go of Zane’s hand and stepped back, awaiting the imposing change.
It’s happened faster than expected. His arms cloaked in the silky black material as mine had before. A deep, dark aura surrounding him. The transformation of complete and utter anger.
His hair lengthened, turning white as mine one had. It stopped when it reached the floor. The thickness making it appear almost... cape like. It sprawled out around him in the most alluring manner.
The shiny metallic coloured blades made a shing! noise as they lengthened. The red glowing vines of power twined around his body.
He was in my opposite and yet completely like me.
As soon as the alteration stopped, he opened his eyes to me. His once warm red eyes now an angered pitch black. His expression softened as he saw my face but he turned and hovered over to the nearest tree. Raising his hand above his head. The glint of the blades struck in the sunlight.
In one furious swipe, he cleanly cut the tree cleanly in half.
“Damn it!”
“Why does he look at you like that?! Only I’m aloud to look at you like that!”
Confusion ran through me. Who was he talking about? Who was looking at me like what? Alpha Jayden’s face flickered to mind. The look of satisfaction he wore before I left. It, in some way had disgusted me. What was there to be satisfied about?
Reaching one hand out, I laid it on his upper arm in a soothing gesture.
“Don’t worry, no matter what happens, I’ll stay by your side. I promise” The words had come naturally and yet I couldn’t help but feel like I had said something wrong. My wolf agreed. It disturbed me a lot.
A great heave of his body symbolized his sigh and I watched as the emotion receded. My mate, always so strong. Pride flushed its warmth into my face as I struggled to control the feeling of love that threatened to overflow.
Turning around and gathering me into his warm, comforting arms, I snuggled into his chest. It felt too comfortable and right. I wanted to stay in his arms forever!
‘That won’t happen, nothing lasts forever’
Jumping slightly, I looked around. What was that? It felt like my unconsciousness... had talked. It was exactly how I truly felt. But how? How was it projected into my mind, talking to me as my wolf would. My wolf!
‘Hey, what was that just now?’
‘Uhh...’
I could feel it. Despite the other conflicting things I felt right now, I could feel that she was hiding something from me. That.... I, was hiding something from myself. It made me dizzy and confused. What in the world was happening?
