1.Prologue

Prologue

Kanari POV

MY name is Chihei Kanari.

I'm guessing that I'm 14 now, but I'm not sure with all this shit happening.

Being experimented on everyday, in and out of huge test tubes, making and losing friends, living in a dark room, all this things made me unsure of what the date it is today, but I kept on hearing from the people in lab coats and red eyes that I've been here for 3 years now.

And if I depend on the age I was taken hear, then I must be 14 years old then.

Everyday in this hell hole is unbearable.

Always feeling unimaginable pain, unpalatable food, disgusting smell.

All of these, I've experienced for 3 years.

And I remember the day when I was taken here.

A week, or so, after November 24, 2037, my birthday, I was walking down the street on my own.

Being bored out of my mind inside the house, I didn't get any permission from my parents and went out for a walk, hopefully finding something interesting

No one to join me, just me alone, not caring about any danger that may befall me.

With some change I was able to get from my piggy bank, I began to look for convenience stores.

After following the sidewalk for about 12 minutes, I was able to find one.

Pushing the heavy glass door, I was able to enter and saw many candies, but I wasn't able to buy that much with the money I have.

Sighing, I looked for something a cheap, but good candy.

Searching in the last aisle, I found a lollipop and was able to buy three.

But, the cashier lady was kind enough to give an extra lollipop after pinching my cheek.

Feeling happy, I went to the part of the convenience store where I can take a seat.

When I found a suitable seat facing the window, I sat there and took out a pocket book titled 'Ghouls Biology', something that a person who looks like a kid shouldn't read, but, I am actually now a 11 year old boy.

My cute face, high pitched voice, and short height would always deceive anyone.

As I put the lolli in my mouth and started to read, I started to forget about time, and only stopped reading when the lollipop was gone.

When I was about to get my second one, a big hand tapped my shoulder.

Being curious as to why someone tapped my shoulder, I looked behind me and saw an old looking man.

"Hi, there! I couldn't help, but notice that you're reading something interesting."(Old man)

Eyeing the old man, I saw that he was wearing a lab coat over a white shirt and black slacks.

While being cautious, I replied to the man.

"Yes. I am very interested in the Ghouls. I mean, why would they only eat human beings and cannibalize if there weren't any? Why does human food taste disgusting to them? Ghouls are really a mystery and I think that they are interesting."(Kanari)

"Oh, my. So young, yet having so many questions that adults would mind."(Old man)

"Sorry, sir, but I'm 11 years old now."(Kanari)

"Really!? I did not expect that!'Yes. I really didn't. He will be perfect for the role.'"(Old man)

The man said something in a whisper that I wasn't able to hear, and seeing my confused look, the man hurriedly waved his hands.

"Ah! Sorry about that. Tell you what, kid. You're very interesting. I could see that you are very smart and you have a huge interest in ghouls, so I will introduce myself. I am Kanuo Akihiro, head of the Ghoul Research Program. Here is my card."(Akihiro)

When the old man introduced himself and showed his card to me, I was suddenly bathed in adrenaline.

"Kanuo?! Professor Kanuo!! The Professor Kanuo!?!"(Kanari)

"Oh? Seems like you've heard of me. That makes it easier. I was just looking around for people with potential. People who will grow into a researcher. And here I am, in front of one."(Akihiro)

"Oh. My. Gosh! Really! Me! A researcher!? For ghouls!?"(Kanari)

"Hahaha! I like your reaction. Yes. You are one. But sorry, I have to go now. Just call me. My number is on my card. Good bye! Nice meeting you, mister?..."(Akihiro)

"It's...it's Kanari, sir!"(Kanari)

"Hahahaha! Good! I'll wait for your call!"(Akihiro)

After seeing my hero off, I excitedly ran back home, where I saw my parents who looked at me with anger.

Bitterly smiling, I said sorry.

After a week has passed, I was not able to contain my excitement anymore so, I called the number on the phone.

When he picked it up, we made arrangements to meet the day after that.

When the day came, I snuck out of the house again and arrived at the meeting place in 30 minutes.

When I reached the place, I knew I was fucked up when I saw ghouls surrounding me.

And from one side of the encirclement appeared professor Kanuo.

When I asked what the fuck was happening, he had a sad expression while confessing that I was perfect for being their specimen in making an artificial half ghoul.

He also said that they were able to make one, but they said that it wasn't enough.

They said that I'll be the final outcome of their experiments.

But, they would prepare me, or should I say, enhance my body before that happens, while they use trial and error on other throwable specimens.

I asked, 'Why me?' and he replied that the way I exuded an aura of innocence, coupled with how cute I already looked, will make no one suspect me as a ghoul, or in this case, a half ghoul.

After that, I was taken away to their hideout.
