Lafayette gulped again, nervous of how much damage he may have done within 10 minutes of meeting this man.

The man, he should say. George Washington was known worldwide for his success. And here Lafayette was, bumping into him.

"I'm sorry I didn't recognize you Sir. I really didn't mean bumping into you, I just thought being late wasn't a very good start to this interview. Well, bumping into you wasn't the best way to start either..." he rushed out, silenced by Mr. Washington's hand.

"You've made an impression alright," he grumbled. Jeez, he really felt the coldness sitting in here with him. Laf instantly forgot all about interview etiquette, looking to his lap and tapping his fingers nervously.

"Let's get started then," his voice bounced off the walls. The room was huge, and Lafayette wondered what the man felt being up here controlling everything below him.

Lafayette gave his resume with shaky fingers. The room fell silent, and he wondered whether Washington was just going to tell him to leave and to not let the door hit him on the way out.

He went back to tapping his fingers against his lap, glancing up at the man before him. He had a pair of reading glasses perched on his nose, as he read the paper with a cold expression.

Washington suddenly sat down the paper, placing his glasses on the desk in front of him. "How soon would you want to start," the man said, startling Lafayette.

Wasn't he going to interview him? Wasn't he going to kick him to the curb. Lafayette cocked his head. "I don't understand sir."

George handed his resume back to him, suddenly standing. "You seem to have an impressive background and spotless record. You have a sharp work ethic I would like to use to better my office. How would you like to be my personal secretary? You will arrange meetings, fetch lunch, basic things like that," Washington explained.

Lafayette was at a loss for words. "Of course sir, I can start whenever you'd like. Thank you for this opportunity," he said, shaking the man's hand.

"You start Monday. One of the other employees can give you a run down of everything. I'll set up a desk for you right outside so you can tend to everything efficiently. I look forward to your future here with us Mr. Lafayette," George said with a firm handshake.
