Hello! I've gotten two requests for another Merasmus story so I'm doing a two parter. This one will be for BlackPearlAndRose, and it'll be a continuation of my last one. Enjoy!

Merasmus's P.O.V.
"TAKE COVER!"
I ducked down quickly, and not a second later a giant explosion shook the walls of the castle. I stood up and sighed, ignoring the ringing in my ears. "If your intention was to knock the paintings off the walls just when we put them all back up, excellent." I chuckled lightly as I turned to my bashful apprentice.
"Sorry... Maybe I'm just not ready for this kind of training yet." She looked disheartened, that wouldn't do at all.
"Nonsense! You can't expect to master the bombinomicon on your first try. You'll get there, I promise!" I smile brightly. "Plus look at how far you've come already, you're looking right at the book and it's not haunting your eye to the point I need to remove it. Fantastic!"
She smiles half-heartedly. "This isn't my first try though. We've been trying and trying but the most magical thing I've done is throw a peanut in the air and catch it in my mouth. I basically have the magical abilities of a dog." It was clear the lack of progress was really getting to her, I needed to do something to lift her spirits. I know just the thing.
"You think that's bad? you should've seen my last apprentice."
She looked up curiously. "Really? What was he like?"
"Oh he was dreadful. He could barely read, let alone cast any magic. In the end he had to be... ex-spelled." She paused for a second before an expression of disgust and laughter overtook her features. I couldn't keep a straight face and started to laugh too. She always loved dumb jokes.
"Oh wow, you really had me there!" she continued chuckling before closing the book and placing it back on it's podium. She walked over to me and reached up, straightening the goat skull that had been offset in the explosion. "Okay, I'm exhausted. Let's head to the kitchen and I'll make us both some coffee and something to eat." She smiled brightly and took me by the hand, leading us both out of the study.
Y/N's P.O.V.
As much as I wanted to just laugh it off, I couldn't shake the fact that I was hopeless. It'd been months since I quit my old job and started working for Merasmus and we weren't any closer to uncovering some secret magic powers that would let me be of any use as an assistant. It was just so frustrating, I felt like I was just letting him down over and over again... Maybe he was wrong to choose me.
"Earth to (Y/N), your coffee's going to get cold." I startle and see Merasmus staring at me. He looks concerned, and before I can put on a smile he interrupts. "You're still worried, aren't you."
I nod apprehensively.
"Look, it doesn't matter. Having the ability to do magic is like having the ability to walk a tightrope. It takes practice, it's difficult, it's completely useless in most situations, and it's dangerous. I didn't give you this opportunity because you had to become the greatest magician that ever lived, I gave it to you because I like who you are as a person and I like having you around. Honestly... I-"
"Shut up!" I shout suddenly. "Just stop trying to make me feel better! You're the greatest magician, you deserve an actual apprentice! Not some stupid barista who wants to be part of something. Find someone with actual talent and stop letting me disappoint you!" I stand up and run out of the room, flying up the stairs and along the corridors. I lean against a wall and try to catch my breath. I felt bad, he didn't deserve to get yelled at.
I hear him calling out for me in the distance. He's looking for me, of course he is. I just screamed at him then ran off, he'd obviously be concerned. I'm such an idiot! I don't think I could face him right now, I need to hide. I look around quickly and open the door nearest to me, silently sneaking in.
I look around. It's a guest bedroom. At least I'm somewhere comfortable and not stuck in some dingy broom closet. I walk over to the bed and fling myself down, staring up at the ceiling.
How did I end up like this?
I was working. It was nearly the end of my shift at the café and this man in a robe and a skull on his head walked in. I remember how I used to be repulsed by the skull, but now it's strangely endearing. He ordered a black coffee via a joke, I still find it funny. I was pulling his leg about the whole magician thing, but he took it seriously. Some brat made fun of him, I banned the brat. We laughed and laughed, god that was good. He gave me a scroll that summoned a doorway to this castle when burnt, now I'm his assistant. His apprentice. His burden. When he walked in the café I gave him a chance. Then he gave me a chance.
No, he's still giving me chances.
He's putting all this effort forward, showing me all this kindness, and I yell at him. He's done nothing but believe in me, it's time I believed in me too. I mean, I'm in a damn magic castle with a wizard. If that's possible, imagine what else is!
I sit up suddenly. The very least I can do is try more, if not for me than for him. I need to go talk to him, tell him I'm ready to learn everything he can teach me! I leap up out of bed, throw open the door and race to the kitchen. He's not there, and when I look outside it's suddenly night time. I must've been wallowing in self pity for quite a while.
Where else could he be? Oh, he's probably cleaning up the mess we made in the study. I tear down the corridor, down another flight of stairs and stop only when I'm facing the heavy oak doors. It's at this point I have a moment of hesitation. What if my outburst has doused any hope he had in me?
I shake my head and push the question to the side. If that's the case, he can tell me rather than me standing here speculating. I take a deep breath and push open the doors.
The room is dark, the only light source being a flickering candle. The candle is on a desk, illuminating some scattered books, strewn papers, and the sleeping face of my mentor. It looks like he fell asleep researching something. I grab one of the papers and hold it to the light so I can read it.
"Different types of magic."
Must be looking for a different approach. It's true we've only been practising combat magic, maybe I'm good at something else! That thought gives me hope. I read another.
"Teaching magic for dummies."
He really is trying his best. I should try harder too, and keep his thoughts and feelings in mind so I don't just lash out at him for my own mistakes.
I turn to leave, but I spot something strange. It's a small book laying open near his hand. It's a drastic difference from the weathered leather tomes. It looks brand new. I hold it up to the light and the first thing I notice is the garish pink cover. Confused, I read the title.
"100 ways to tell if you're in love."
...Oh.
I look again at his sleeping face. He looks calm at a first glance, but look closer and I can see his furrowed brows and tightly closed lips. Something must be really weighing on his mind, and it wouldn't surprise me if he's inexperienced in this area. I felt a smile on my own face and place a hand over my fluttering heart. At least I know I won't need that book to tell me. He might need some help though, but that can all come later. I note the strong draft blowing through the study and look around, spying a blanket lying folded on a chair. I pick it up and drape it over his sleeping form.
"See you in the morning." I whisper and kiss him lightly on the cheek. I don't know what tomorrow will bring but I'm ready to learn.
