"Hey relax. Everything will be ok." I told Camila as we walked up the stairs of our new school. "I'm just nervous. This is all new." She says to me. "I know. But I'll be right beside you the whole time." She nodded with a small smile. Emily, Camila, and I walked into our class. The teacher looks at us and nods towards the seats. I could tell she had no respect for us at all.

Camila and I walked to the back and sat down. "Hey I'm Anthony." The boy beside me say. I gave him a small wave. "I'm Y/n. These are my best friends Camila and Emily." I told him. "Are y'all new here? I've never seen you before." He asks. "Yeah. We moved here a few weeks ago." I told him. "That's cool. If you ever need help with anything just ask. I'll be happy to help." He said. I smile and nodded. "Thanks. I really appreciate that." I say. "So like half the school just decided not to come? Is that even ok to do?" Camila asks. Anthony chuckled and shook his head.

"It does matter but they don't want to go to school with us. Some of them stopped coming. Kinda like they protesting against it. Then theirs the rich white families. They're all building their own private schools." He says. "They just finished building one across town. But the poor ones still go here. That's why most of them are still going here." He explains. "That's fucked up." Emily says. "Alright class. I'm going to take role now. So settle down." Mrs Smith says. As she went through names everyone let her know they were present. I got my pencil and paper ready.

"Alright class! Let's start with math." She writes a problem on the board. My pencil rolled off the table. So I quickly picked it up. "You. Girl in the blue blouse." I looked up noticing she was talking to me. "Why don't you come work it out since you can't seem to stay focused." She says glaring at me. But I was only grabbing my pencil. "I'm Y/n?" I tell her. She scoffs and rolls her eyes. "I didn't ask for your name. Now come up and do the problem." She demands.

I internally groan and go up to the chalk board. Grabbing a piece of chick I started doing the problem step by step. It wasn't a hard one either. When I finished I placed chalk down and turned to her. "Hmm... who would've thought a nigger would know math." She mumbles before clearing her throat. That instantly made me mad but I didn't show it. "That's correct. Now go sit down." When I got to my seat I let out a big sigh. "What's wrong?" Emily whispered. I just shook my head.
