"Y/n what's wrong?" Grandma babs asks as we all the women sat in the living. We had all just gotten home from school. Everyone was either talking or doing homework. "What do you mean?" I asked and continued writing. Not once did I look up. "You look upset. Did something happen at school?" She asked. By now everyone was looking at me. I could feel it. "Nothing wrong grandma." I say. "Y/n we all know you. You don't go a minute without talking or getting jumped by the girls cause you purposely annoy them." My aunt says.
"I just don't feel like talking at the moment." I tell her. "Camila and I think it's our teacher said something." Emily tells them. "Really? You know you can tell us sweetheart. I'll go talk to your principal tomorrow too." My aunt says. I could tell she was upset. I closed my eyes and pursed my lips together. Placing my pencil down and reopening my eyes. "Fine I'll tell you why I'm upset." I say.
"Mrs Smith started to teaching. In the middle of it I drop my pencil. Do I go to get it and she assumes I wasn't paying attention. So she tells me to come work out the problem on the chalkboard. Once I finish I look to her to make sure I did it right. And she says who would've thought a nigger know would know math." I tell them. I hear all of them gasp. "Mija..." Mrs Clara says. "Y'all don't worry about it. Mom don't go up to the school. I can handle it. It's not like I haven't heard it all before." I say.
"Are you sure? I'll go up there first thing in the morning." She says. "Ma I'm sure. Up get over it. I'm just a little upset. That's all." I tell her. "Ok I won't. But if you ever need me to I will." She tells me and pats my shoulder. "Thank you. Can we change the subject now?" I ask. "Of course." I smile and go back to my work.
