Marinette's POV
I woke up in Adrien's room, and wondered two things.
1: When did I get into Adrien's room?
2: When did I even fall asleep?
I sat up in the bed that I was lying in and looked for Adrien. I looked around the whole room and on the sofa to no avail. He wasn't in the room. I decided to get up and get dressed. As I made my way to the bathroom, the door swung open. I was met face to face with a topless, freshly-showered, and shocked Adrien. I immediately averted my gaze to the floor.
"I-I'm s-sorry, Adrien," I apologized.
He seemed nonchalant as he replied, "It's all good. I'm just going to put clothes on if you want to go in the bathroom."
I simply nodded, and slid past him into the bathroom. I washed my face then I tried to replay what even happened yesterday. I remember going shopping and going into a store, but then I can't remember anything. I then realized that Adrien was with me yesterday, and he would most likely fill me in on the details.
So I called out to Adrien,"Do you have c-clothes on? Can I come back i-in?"
There was a second of scrambling before Adrien answered, "Yeah, you can come back in."
I entered the room again, and was glad to find that he was wearing clothes. I sat on the bed; he situated himself on the sofa and started watching the news. I let him do that for a good twenty minutes before curiosity got the better of me.
"Hey, Adrien?"
"Yes, Marinette?"
He didn't look away from the TV, so I paused and waited until he looked at me. When he did finally look at me, I asked him.
"Could you tell me what happened yesterday?"
Something flashed in his grass green eyes, and his shoulders became a little more tense. This startled me for a moment. He obviously seemed nervous about what happened yesterday, and that just made me fear everything that much more.
When he didn't reply, I repeated myself by asking, "W-what happened?"
He took a deep breath. He opened his mouth, but was interrupted by my phone ringing. I never got calls, so this made me a little anxious. It was either some telemarketer or something important. I grabbed my phone to answer.
"Um, hello?" I answered.
I furrowed my brow, and Adrien made a face. He made his way over to the bed, and put the phone on speaker. He listened to the person on the other side breathing heavily for a moment.
"M-my l-little Mari berry cheery," a slurred person called out familiar nicknames.
I froze. Fear coursed through my veins. That was a nickname that I hadn't heard in a long time. The nickname wasn't what paralyzed me. The voice was deep, but soft. It was always soft and had always been.
"Well, h-hy there," another voice came through that sounded less drunk, but was still slurred a bit.
That voice was feminine, and sent a shiver down my spine. I had my doubts about the first voice actually being him, but this second voice proved that my accusations were correct. The voice was so sweet sounding. Of course, I knew better than to trust that voice. I haven't trusted that voice for years.
Adrien looked at me confused, but my focus was on the voices coming through my phone. He seemed to sense something was off, but he didn't seem to know exactly what.
"May I ask who this is?" Adrien asked looking between me and the phone.
There was a pause where I could only hear my shaky breathing. I prayed that I was wrong.
"Her m-mother and father," my mom replied, and I took a sharp intake. "Now may I ask who you are?"
Adrien's eyes widened, but went back to their regular size soon. He seemed pissed. His jaw was clenched and his voice was strained as he spoke again.
"My name is Adrien," he answered in a straightforward manner.
My father's voice then joined the conversation, "Oh, Marinette. W-we miss you so much honey. When are you c-coming home?"
The way he said it was too over-the-top. Anybody could tell that he was lying or being sarcastic. I almost wanted to say bullshit to him saying he misses me.
It seemed I didn't need to say anything though because Adrien exclaimed, "Cut the bullshit. What do you want with Marinette. I know what you've been doing to her, so don't try to act all innocent."
I could almost feel my parents falter. They probably thought I would stay obedient or rather they didn't expect somebody to almost literally beat it out of me.
"Marinette," my mother's voice—which sounded harsher—addressed me, "we are running l-low on money. We found the perfect way to make m-money. We got somebody to take you to a motel and do whatever they want to you for a f-few hours. They'll pay us good, so we n-need you."
I looked at Adrien. He looked absolutely disgusted. I felt bile begin to rise in my throat as well.
"She'll be staying with me from now on, and you will not contact her again," Adrien informed my parents. "Don't go looking for her either or I will report you to child services."
"Wait! Mar—" my mother's disembodied voice started, but was cut off by Adrien hanging up.
He then went and blocked my parents numbers from my phone. I stared at him for a moment shocked at how far we had come. He used to beat me up for God's sake! Now, he's beginning to help me escape my abusive parents.
"Are you okay?" he asked me.
I simply nodded, and looked down at my shaking hands that sat in my lap. I suddenly saw his hands go over mine, and I stopped shaking momentarily. I looked up to see his green eyes more comforting and accepting.
"You can stay here, and I promise you, Mari," he started, never breaking eye contact, "I'll protect you."
Okay it's literally been too long. I have no excuses, and probably should've updated at the most 2 weeks later. Well oops! Hope this chapter makes up for it—even though I think it doesn't.
