The dinner at Sam and Emily's had left Aniya feeling a sense of warm comfort. While her best friends were preoccupied with their romantic relationships, Aniya found it refreshing to have companionship from someone who wasn't entangled in their own romantic lives.

Though she didn't find her friends' preoccupation bothersome per se, it still left her feeling somewhat lonely on occasion.

Emily had proven to be a fantastic companion, and now that Sam had no objections to their friendship, Aniya found herself feeling greatly relieved.

"And she lives! Honestly I was a few minutes away from going out to search for you."

Aniya chuckled at her brother-in-law, Nick's, greeting. "I'm home!" she replied.

Nick shook his head, commenting, "I assured your sister you were fine, but as usual, she had to go into 'overprotective' mode. He then added with a hint of jest, "You aren't hurt or off with some random guy, are you?"

Aniya chuckled and entered the kitchen, replying to Nick's jest, "Nick, honestly? Me, with a guy?" She teased him playfully, prompting him to roll his eyes dramatically.

Nick tried to make a playful remark, suggesting, "Unless it was Jacob-"

Aniya promptly cut him off, her frown deepening at the mention of Jacob's name. She clarified firmly, "We aren't friends, Nick, I've already told you that. I was simply with my friend, and I apologize for causing any worry for you both."

Aniya didn't want to appear impolite, particularly to her brother-in-law, who had always been kind to her. He had been a positive influence on her sister, and it was one of the reasons she often chose not to spend much time at home. As a newly married couple, she believed they deserved to spend quality time together without the added worry about her well-being.

Nick sighed apologetically, acknowledging
Aniya's dislike for the topic. "I know you hate discussing him, but he was a wonderful person-"

Aniya interjected, "Yes, that WAS true, but people change." She let out a sigh and took a seat at the table, then politely pleaded, "Nick, could we please talk about something other than Jacob?"

Nick chuckled and nodded in agreement. "Of course," he replied, his tone shifting into his usual lighthearted demeanor. A grin spread across his face as he continued, "If this friend happens to be male-"

Aniya interrupted with a quickness, her voice slightly flustered, "It's a girl, and her name is Emily Young." She could feel the heat in her face as she spoke, knowing that Nick was the polar opposite of her sister, taking on the role that most sisters would typically assume. In contrast, her sister acted more like a protective mother, constantly fussing over her schooling, while Nick tended to focus on her love life. Aniya didn't mind this much, but it could be a tad wearying at times.

Nick's tone switched up, realizing the significance of Emily's identity. He inquired with surprise, "Wait, Emily Young, the fiancée of Sam Uley?"

Aniya's face betrayed her concern as she nodded in confirmation, waiting for Nick's reaction.

Nick continued ranting with sincere concern, expressing his thoughts on Emily's situation within the Rez. "It's really disheartening how people here can act so cautious around her just because of her injury. Sure, it's natural to wonder why she was near a bear, but honestly, they shouldn't make it such a big deal. It's not like she chose to get hurt-" Aniya couldn't help but smile at his passionate words, appreciating his unbiased perspective on the matter.

She silently agreed that the community's behavior towards Emily was unfortunate. It's difficult to know why she was near a bear, but the constant gossip and scrutiny seemed unfair. Nick's genuine concern for Emily's well-being was evident, and his lack of focus on the usual 'gang' gossip relieved her.

Aniya looked at Nick, seeking his approval as she inquired, "You're fine with me hanging out with her, even though it might lead to me spending time around Sam and his friends, right?"

Nick reassuringly patted her hand, replying, "Ani, whoever you wish to be friends with is not for me to judge. Besides, those boys are incredibly helpful around the Rez. I don't understand why people have spread those rumors about them being toxic. If you think about it, the mothers who say that are often the ones whose kids need a reality check, not the boys themselves."

Aniya felt a wave of relief wash over her as Nick gave his support. She knew that hanging out with Emily might occasionally put her in Sam's company, but his willingness to embrace her choice spoke volumes. The thought that the negative rumors about Sam and his friends were likely baseless comforted her, and she appreciated Nick's sensible perspective.

With Nick's approval, Aniya's concerns about potential future encounters with Sam were eased. His understanding and trust in her decision-making meant a lot. Moreover, Nick's insight about the baseless rumors against Sam and his friends offered a refreshing perspective, making her thankful for his grounded attitude.

Time flew by as Anthea, Aniya's older sister, returned home. She chimed in, wholeheartedly agreeing with Nick's viewpoint.

The evening carried on late into the night, filled with engaging conversation and heartfelt discussions.

In the end, Aniya found comfort in the support of her sister and brother-in-law. They emphasized their trust in her and encouraged her to keep them informed about her whereabouts, especially if she planned to stay out late. Their concern and understanding formed a strong bond, ensuring that Aniya felt cared for and guided as she navigated her relationships and independent decisions.
