"Mom and Dad were amazing," Anthea began, her voice warm but tinged with a wistful nostalgia. "They gave us everything they could, even when they didn't have much to give." She paused, her gaze distant as she pulled at the threads of memory.
"Dad wasn't actually blood-related to anyone on the Rez," she continued. "He was adopted by someone here after his real parents died here apparently they were friends with someone in the rez, so that friend decided to adopt dad, a technically he was born and raised as part of the community. It didn't matter where his biological parents came from. The Rez was his home."
Aniya listened intently, her mind racing to piece together a past she barely remembered.
"Mom, on the other hand," Anthea said, her tone shifting slightly, "she wasn't welcomed here at first. She wasn't born on the Rez, and you know how people can be about outsiders. Still, she moved here, met Dad, and eventually had us. She made it work."
"What did Mom do?" Aniya asked, her curiosity deepening.
"Mom worked alongside the other mothers who were healers," Anthea replied. "The Rez didn't like relying on the hospital in Forks, so they turned to traditional medicine. Mom loved it—it was her way of giving back to a place that wasn't always kind to her."
