We set off on our journey as soon as we exited the big house. All of our belongings were stored in the trunk of Willow's car, though Leo and I had things to keep us from getting bored on the drive to... Wherever. I had my walkman and Leo had... A piece of scrap metal.
Whatever floats your boat dude."Where are we going exactly?" I asked, cracking my knuckles and pausing my music. I was listening to Avril Lavigne this time, my mom loved her, apparently.
"Galveston, in texas!" Leo chirped. "I have a cousin who owns a boat company. It's kinda small, but we can get a free yacht there. Who doesnt want a free yacht??"
"How do we know it's gonna be free?" Willow asked, glancing at us from the mirror. "For all we know we have to pay full price."
"He owes my family. More specifically, my mom." Leo tapped on the side car door nervously. "But since she isn't exactly here and Randy is superstitious about everything, the debt transferred over to me." He shrugged. It was still shocking to me that he could talk about this type of thing so casually. I knew deep down that it really bothered him. I felt bad.
"Oh... Well... What happened?" Willow asked. I internally cringed.
"his family came to America to start the boating company, my uncle got into some trouble and his family almost had to get deported. My mom, who was a total saint, gave a testimony in court that saved their asses. They've been in Galveston since."
"Oh."
"Damn." I mumbled.
"Yea fuck the system."
"Word." Willow nodded. She was right. Fuck the system.
Galveston was exactly what I expected from a beach down in Texas. Lots of local business, some sketchy alleyways and a rocking boardwalk. It was snowing on the ground and the beach was isolated. It was a grim reminder as to why we were on this journey in the first place.
Willow pulled up to a dingy looking warehouse with an old dusted sign that read, in giant red letters: "RANDY'S BOAT SHACK!" While Willow and I were sketched out of our minds, constantly looking behind us for creeps/monsters, Leo seemed totally confident. He took on this different persona, more on the genuinely confident than cocky side. He turned to us, crossing his arms.
"I'll do the talking. Y'all just sit here." Since we stepped foot in this yeehaw country, Leo's southern drawl popped out. I forgot that he was pretty much raised here for his childhood, at least before it went to shit.
Not gonna lie, if I had to move here just to listen to Leo's southern accent, I would. It was insanely attractive. We all walked into the warehouse. Almost immediately, we were blasted with the AC, and a car salesman looking dude popped out. He was taller than all of us, and had that I'm going to scam the shit out of you look to him. Like a gambler. Willow and I stole a glance from each other, we apparently had the same bad feeling. This was quickly wiped away when Randy bear hugged Leo, picking him up with ease and practically yelling:
"Leonidas! ¿Que pasa? ¿como has estado? Ha pasado mucho tiempo, ¿cómo te trata la vida de un delincuente?"
Leo barely managed to squirm out of his grip, I could literally hear the poor kid's back crack like a glowstick. He had that look on his face; one that only comes out during family reunions: get me out of here.
Remember when I said Leo's southern accent was attractive? It's about to get worse."Randy! áspero! Necesito un favor, primo. Eres una deuda con mi difunta madre, así que me debes."
Willow and I tuned out as soon as they started talking in two things we didn't know: Spanish and boat slang.
