Two Weeks Later
Amelia wakes up, at her parents house for the first time in a little over a month. She gets up and gets in the shower, washing her hair last. She gets out of the shower, dries her hair and gets dressed.
Amelia grabs her keys, purse, and phone and heads out to her jeep. She gets in and drives to the courthouse, biting her lip as she turns on the radio to clear her head. She pulls into the parking lot, shuts off the jeep and gets out. She goes inside, where she sees Alex talking to his lawyer. Amelia sits on the bench nearby and waits, as Leah walks in. Amelia keeps her head down, trying to avoid eye contact with Leah as she walks by. Alex glances over when his lawyer does and sighs as he sees Leah. He walks over and sits next to Amelia, taking her hand in his. Amelia gives him a small smile, her leg shaking slightly. He rests his other hand on her leg to calm her nerves.
"I hate this place.." Amelia whispers softly, closing her eyes.
"I know baby.. I know. This shouldn't take more than 40 minutes. They aren't going to ask you any questions, all you have to do is sit there and look beautiful." Alex replies softly with a smile, squeezing her hand gently. Amelia squeezes his hand back and gives him a small smile.
"I love you, Alex." Amelia says quietly. Alex kisses her temple softly.
"I love you, too Amelia." Alex replies softly. Amelia smiles slightly as they stand and walk over to his lawyer, hand in hand. Amelia had met Alex's lawyer once, when she came over with the social worker to see Alex's apartment. They walk into the courtroom, Amelia sitting in the row behind where Alex and his lawyer are sitting. She glances over to where Leah is and sees her staring daggers at her. Amelia quickly looks back down, fidgeting with her hands.
The judge comes in and gets things started. Leah's lawyer starts off with asking for Leah to have every other week with Addie. Alex's lawyer immediately says no, and offers every weekend. Leah's lawyer counters with their old arrangement which was Sunday midday through Wednesday afternoon for Leah and Wednesday evening to Sunday midday for Alex. Alex looks back at Amelia and gives her an apologetic look. His lawyer then counters that they start with every other weekend, stating that Addie needs a stable living environment and she currently has that with Alex.
Alex's lawyer also points out the accident in which Leah neglected Addie when she ran out side and was almost hit by the car. The judge continues making notes while Alex's lawyer speaks. His lawyer also mentions Leah's current living situation, where she's living with four other people. Leah's lawyer counters with Alex's living situation, where there were two toddler beds in Addie's room. Alex's lawyer counters with the facts of the situation regarding the second toddler bed. The judge looks up, makes eye contact with Amelia and stops both lawyers from talking.
"Miss, can you please shed some light on this situation?" The judge asks Amelia. Amelia stands, her legs shaky.
"I.. I can try. Um, my name is Amelia Hart and I'm Alex's girlfriend. The living situation has changed since the social worker has been to the apartment. My son and I lived with Alex for about three and a half weeks for personal reasons. It was a temporary thing, but as noted by the social worker, Addie was not treated any less. In fact, Alex would find activities to do not only with Addie but with Jake as well. Alex is a very good father, and he has a system in place to help him with Addie when he needs it. I honestly think it would be in Addie's best interest if she stays with her father." Amelia says with a shaky voice.
