Chapter Nine
I woke up, greeted by blinding white light.
Am I dead?
I blinked, trying to get my eyes to adjust to the bright light. My eyes slowly came into focus and I recognized the light and the familiar white ceiling. I groaned and closed my eyes tightly for a minute in confusion.
Where am I?
I was most likely in the hospital again. I heard the faint beeping of the heart monitor by my side. I listened to the beeping of my heart, which always seemed to beat slightly faster than other people's even when I'm calm. I hated the hospital, though. I practically grew up in the hospital when I was younger, ever since I found out I had asthma, that time when I was playing with Kris and the other kids in our neighborhood. I get frequent asthma attacks since then, causing me to spend most of my time in the hospital. And even now, I still went for quite a regular visit, just not as often as before.
It wasn't much of a surprise to find a mask over my nose and mouth that released some sort of gas containing medicine that helped me breathe better.
"You're awake." I jumped slightly at mom's voice. I sensed the tiredness in the tone of her voice and her eyes were red and puffy. Had she been crying?
I removed the mask in order to speak without my words being muffled up. I placed it on the little table by the side of the bed. "Yeah..." My voice was hoarse and I realized that my throat was really dry.
"W-Water," I forced the words out, it was barely audible but i hoped mom understood me anyway. She reached for the glass of water on the table which I did not even realized was there earlier. I tried to sit up as she did so and I winced at the sudden headache.
"You okay?" she asked, handing me the glass when she heard me groan.
"Yeah," I nodded, taking it from her gratefully and gulped down the whole glass of water before placing the empty glass back on the table. "What happened?" I asked carefully just as the memories came rushing back into my head. I saw these few delinquents smoking, pretty much had an attack because of the smoke, got threatened, almost got hit before Delos came and saved me...I think? I couldn't quite remember what happened after that.
Did they have a fight? I remembered a loud "crack" and a scream. But I couldn't seem to remember what had happened. I guess I passed out.
"You had another attack and passed out at school," mom started, her forehead was creased with worry.
I started to worry about wether or not she knew what had caused the attack. I thought about the consequences if she knew. It was mostly my fault. I knew I couldn't stand the smell of smoke yet I stopped to identify the smoker, risking getting an attack and risking my safety as well, since I almost got punched. And if I told her it was for prefect duty, she might make me quit, and I couldn't quit now. Kate would be so pissed if I left her alone.
"It was a good thing this young boy..." mom trailed off, she seemed to be thinking. "What was his name? I'm sure you know him, he seemed to know you. Danny, was it?"
I knew exactly who she was talking about. "Delos," I corrected her. He was the one who saved me after all. I felt my cheeks heat up when I remembered what he said.
