Prologue:
Just a man
As you probably know by now, in France 1815, poor were looked down on. One family were really struggling, a lady lived with her brother and her son. Her son was very young and very hungry but they had no food to feed him. Life went on, and her brother, Jean Valjean, couldn't get work so they didn't have any money. The child was so thin, you could almost see his insides! He was going to die, any time soon, so Jean Valjean did something he hadn't dared to do before, he stole. He could bare it no more he smashed the window of a bakery and stole a loaf of bread. He, of course, was seen and was taking for trial.
"You can't let a child starve! Can you? IF YOU'D LET A POOR CHILD DIE?" He shouted at the judge. He was sentenced to five years in the slavery . From then on he was called 'prisoner 24601.' Over the years he grew vey strong because he had to work in the mines and pull in a boat; You'd never seen a man so strong. One sunny day, the prisoners were mining on a cliff side when suddenly a Bolder fell onto a guards back, no one could lift it off him, except 24601. Using all the muscles in his body, he lifted the giant rock off of him. He wasn't in jail for just five years, no. He spent nineteen years in prison because, on multiple occasions, he tried to run or escape. Over time, his clean shaven face, changed. He now had a long beard that was not well kept.
Finally the day came when he'd be let out."Now, prisoner 24601," Jeavet- The chief police man- told him, "you're on parole." (If you don't know what that means, it's when you're let out of jail but you have to carry a passport that says that you've been a criminal.)
"Finally," He sighed, as he was handed his passport, "and my money?"
Jeavet threw a bag of coins at him.
"What?" He gasped, "but this is nothing! Do you know how long I've been here?"
"Do you want it or not?" Asked Jeavet. 24601 took it.
"You've got your name back Jean Valjean." He was told, "but let me just make this clear, you are a thief, and always will be, Valjean you can not escape your past."Valjean found a small town to live in, he also found a small job to work at; but when it came the end of the day, he was paid half of what the other man got.
Jean Valjean was determined to get his full money, so he stole from a small child, but never paid the time in jail for it. No hotel or house would let him stay. And from then on, Jean Valjean new that life isn't fair...
Chapter 1:
The Bishop's kindness
In 1815, M. Charles Myriel was the Bishop of a small town. He was an old man (around seventy-five or seventy-six.) He was the Bishop since 1806. In his past years, he had lived in Italy, where his wife sadly past away. He had no children, nor any family, what was he supposed to do? He moved back to France and became the Bishop. But no one new any other about him, only that he was a Bishop and he had moved from Italy. That is not relevant to the rest of this story, only I thought I'd tell you anyway because his character is very important. He was a good man and a kind one at that, he believed everyone has good in them even if they don't know it, so when a former convict (criminal) knocked on his door asking for a bed to rest at night, he Didn't hesitate answering. He welcomed this man into his house and shared his food with him. His servant, madam Magloire, was very shocked about this, he knew nothing of this man, so why did he treat him like family? She didn't, and sadly wouldn't understand his ways. The Bishop took this man down the hall and into a small room next to his own.
"You're giving a room next to yours? How do you know I won't murder in the night?" Asked he, the convict.
"Because even if you don't know it, I do. There is good in your soul, just the same as any other man." The great Bishop answered.
The Convict was, if you haven't guessed by now, Was Jean Valjean. And, the Bishop was right, in the night, Valjean did not murder him. But, to the Bishops astonishment, Valjean was not in his bed in the morning! Where was he?
"Sir! Sir!" Cried madam Magloire.
"Yes?"
"The silver, Sir, it's gone!" She Said, tears filling her eyes, "I locked it away safely, Sir, I promise. Oh! Please don't send me away!"
"I'm not going to send you away, Magloire, now do stop it. I trust your word, just as God would." He told her.
"Oh, oh! Thank you, Sir. Thank you!"
"Thank not me, but the creator." By that he of course meant God.
Magloire said a quick prayer before realising who must of taken the precious silver. "It must of been that man you let sleep here!"
Magloire was right because later that day, two police officers, came to the Bishop, telling him that they had found Jean Valjean stealing the silver.
"Here it is," one of them said, "Valjean Said you'd given it to him."
Magloire, couldn't wait to see Valjean be chained up again for stealing, but the Bishop lied!
"He is Speaking the truth. Madam Magloire and I where just saying that he had forgotten to take the candle sticks, we said you could have them!"
Magloire and the police men could believe what they heard; nor could Valjean himself. The kind Bishop let Valjean take the silver and the candle sticks with him, but he told Valjean that he was to use it for good and not to take for granted.
Jean Valjean couldn't stop thinking after this. What had he done? He used to be a nice, friendly man and now he was a thief. Jeavet's words came back to him, "but let me just make this clear, you are a thief, and always will be, Valjean you can not escape your past." But then the Bishop has told him,
"There is good in your soul, just the same as any other man."
Valjean committed one last crime, he broke Parole. He ripped his passport in half and left it at the Bishops house. He was going to change his life around, he was going to do good. But Jeavet was still after Valjean and he swore that he'd find Jean Valjean and take him back to jail for braking Parole.
