Contrary to what Yeseong and Yonggun had expected, Namjoon was compliant and quiet the whole time they explained everything. In fact, they told every little detail thoroughly that there wouldn’t possibly be room for any misunderstandings.
Then teenage boy seemed like he was ‘listening’ to what they had to say. At least that’s what both of them hoped. The boy would nod every time they checked if he’s actually listening, yet they weren’t sure if he was actually okay. Well, he looked fine outside, they were worried of the possibility that Namjoon was breaking inside.
Mrs. Kim would prefer it more if Namjoon showed any kind of reaction. She didn’t expect her child to act like it was nothing; like they just told him they broke his favorite toy and Namjoon acted like he was mature enough to handle it. Yeseong doubted it. She knew her son was usually calm, but she also knew even the most mature person would break down with such revelation. And yet, her son appeared to be ‘fine.' It broke her heart as a mother.
“Namjoon?” Yeseong called.
Namjoon blinked, he even managed to sport a small smile. “Yes, mom?”
“Are you okay?”
The purple haired looked down, he stared at the way his thumbs stroke the joints of his slender fingers. The voices had toned down a bit, he could still hear the little discouraging whispers somewhere in the depths of his mind. Namjoon remembered, he hated these strange voices. They’re not him, yet they sounded like him.
They haunted him everytime he thought of his dad. He didn’t know when and how they started to corrupt his mind. He almost believed they completely disappeared after he became a sophomore, but they always found a way to come back louder than they were than the last time, like they never left. And it’s starting again.
Maybe he knew, he knew in the back of his mind that he’d always been aware of the grand scheme of things. He chose to deny it because he believed the only person he trusted— his mom.
Namjoon raised his head, “I think I wanna be alone for now.”
Yeseong wasn't surprised at his son's statement. She nodded and placed her hand on top of his clammy hands.
"Okay, honey. You can have as much time as you want, but please... promise me you'll stay safe." She firmly squeezed his hand.
"Of course." Namjoon nodded his head, pushing his chair backwards. He removed his hand from his mother's hold and stood up.
He glanced at Yonggun. He took a small bow at the man before he walked out of the dining room. They were silent until they heard the front door close.
Yeseong washed her hands on her red face, she broke out a loud sob.
Yonggun abruptly stood up and went up to her side. He rubbed soft circles on her back. He shushed her with reassurances.
"Namjoon's a strong and intelligent kid, and I know that he'll forgive you eventually. He won't stay angry with you, I know he won't. I don't know him that well, but I'm sure he's an understanding kid just like his mother."
Yeseong hugged Yonggun while she cried. Yonggun embraced her tearfully, worried of his son.
Yeseong took minutes to calm down. Yonggun's still rubbing her back softly when her face started to display worry. She shook her head profusely.
"No, I can't let him be alone now. Why did I even let him go in the first place? Shit, I'm so stupid, Yonggun. What if something happens to my baby?" She stood up, she looked for her phone even if her whole body was trembling.
