Starchy Days

We held each other hostage
Full with shotguns, shouts, and shudders.
Forget the fact that we cried out and begged for help,
We wore each other down into the gutters
Beneath our feet within the road
We ended up in the place under our toes.
I cannot fathom how it came to this
How the fuck is it we came to miss
Big neon-light signs
   Multi-million dollar fines
And beautiful little powder lines?
These things that had seemed to be a rush
Have left us panting, red and flushed.
I can't fucking breathe and you can't walk,
What's absolutely heartbreaking is that we can't talk
Without spitting shards of glass into each other's faces
And infecting one another's personal spaces
With bacteria, bile, and maggots
Bad coping mechanisms and even worse habits.
And I'm sorry I don't mean to laugh it's just that people ruin each other.
We make it hard without remembering you can't burn bridges and run around rendering
  The ashes and the sticks
This isn't something we can fix.
The tides will take their time in turning, for
Now all we can do is nurse this wicked burning inside our chests and behind our eyes
Until we remember each other's wicked lies
It's probably what fueled the fire,
Funny we both lied and called the other a liar.
Chalk it up to we're both hypocrites
Or that the other has a cold heart so we warn the newcomers, "Be careful, wear mitts!"
This is all just exaggeration
Fueled by the fantasy of infatuation
Laced between our fingertips
and pouring out, gushing from our lips
In timid anticipation
For the other persons declaration
To fight the world for them,
But we forget that we are only human
And nobody can love you
So much that they take away the blue.
The Blue Thought I mean
The one that flows like a river,
The one that makes you feel so alone and shiver
Nobody can take away that.
It flies around your head like a bat!
That is to say that it will make you feel batty
And your hair look a little bit ratty
If you don't get away.
You shouldn't make promises to stay.
