We'd been walking all night, and honestly, I couldn't stop thinking about Lucas. I felt bad for leaving him behind. I knew he could handle himself, he always could, but still. What if something happens and I'm not there?

But I needed to be here too. My friends were still trapped inside Mount Weather, and Bellamy needed help. I wanted to help him.

Lincoln had killed a white deer, and I tried not to gag as I watched him slice it open like it was nothing. Bellamy did the same. Then Lincoln reached into the deer's stomach and smeared its blood across his face. I scrunched my nose and looked away.

Bellamy crouched next to him, trying not to look as grossed out as I felt.

"Okay. So we make it to the intake door without any of the real Reapers seeing us," Bellamy said. "What happens then?"

"I kill everyone. You both slip inside. Limestone." Lincoln held out his hand.

Bellamy handed over the limestone, and Lincoln drew pale stripes across his already blood-covered face. "Let's go. We have a lot of ground to cover before dark."

As we walked, Bellamy glanced over. "I need to know what happened after the intake door."

"They remove your clothes. Blast you with boiling water, then douse you with something that burns even worse." Lincoln didn't even blink. "And then we were sorted. The others were tagged 'harvest.' I was tagged 'Cerberus,' turned into a Reaper."

"Cerberus," I echoed, more sounding like a question.

"Three-headed dog that guards the underworld," Bellamy explained.

Lincoln and I both looked at him like he'd just grown a second head.

"My mum read mythology to us all the time. Octavia loved it."

Lincoln actually smiled at that.

"You're good for her," Bellamy added. "You made her strong."

"She was already strong," Lincoln said without hesitation.

I looked at Lincoln. "Can I ask something?" He gave me a small nod. "Why'd you protect Octavia before you even knew her? Why risk everything for someone you didn't even talk to?"

He paused before answering. "When I was a boy, I saw a ship fall from the sky. Like Raven's. The man inside was hurt, his body broken. I couldn't get him out."

"Suicide by Earth," I said quietly. "I've heard stories about that. From the guards. I didn't know it actually happened."

Bellamy shot me a weird look. "How would you hear something like that from the guards?"

I gave him a little smirk. "I told you I have my ways."

Lincoln went on. "I brought him food, water. I didn't speak the enemy's language yet. So I couldn't understand him, but I wanted to. So on the third day, I told my father. He made me kill him." He looked away. "The world's been trying to turn me into a monster for as long as I can remember. Let's keep moving."
