I looked around nervous and unsure, naturally I wasn't the only kid around whose parents weren't there to help them get settled in. But knowing that didn't make being here alone any easier.
"Lost sweetie?" A voice called, startling me and I spun around to see a woman standing behind me with a large smile on her face. She had long beautiful white hair pulled into a ponytail on the back of her head and held in place by a pink bow. She wore a pearl necklace and matching pearl earrings that complimented her pale complexion. She wore a frilly purple shirt and white frilly knee length skirt completed her outfit. "Um yes, I'm not really sure where to go?" I asked nervously. "That's perfectly normal honey, I'm the nurse here, my name is Daisy Duck, but what you want to do is go see that lady at the table. She is the check in station, so you can go over there and she will give you your schedule and dorm room as well as a map of the campus." I looked to where Nurse Duck was pointing and saw another lady sitting at a table across campus. "Oh ok, thank you." I said activating the wheels on my suitcase before beginning my trek over.
"Hello" I said as I got to the table and the woman smiled at me, she had the same pale skin Nurse Duck had but her hair was short and black as night. Her hair was held back by a red and white polka dot bow head band that matched her knee length dress.
"Hello, incoming freshman?"
"Yes, ma'am" I said and she moved to a stack of papers.
"Name?"
"Wendy Darling" I said as she swiftly moved through the files until she reached mine.
"Here you are Wendy, your going to be on the first floor of the Purple Dorm which is that way" she said pointing to a bright purple building to our left. " Your dorm moderator's name is Mrs. Potts and she can help you with anything further you need." Before I could ask any more questions, she turned to another student. I dragged my suitcase off to the side so other students could get to the table and opened my file and took a look at what was inside.
A slip of paper with my dorm on it and a four digit code, I assume to get into the dorm; a map of campus that was way over color coded making the paper seem like a bright unorganized rainbow. Another paper had my schedule on it and I quickly scanned it looking for my elective, Home Economics. I winced, I had wanted creative writing, but I guess the class was full. The rest of my classes seemed fairly standard and I noticed my dorm moderator was also my home economics teacher. Also included in my packet were a list of school/ dorm rules, there weren't any surprises there; light out at 10:30, dorm doors lock at 8:30, no boys allowed in the girls' dorms and vice versa.A loud "dong" sound went off and I immediately took out my phone, opening up the front flap of my Big Ben phone case to see a text from my mom.
Mother: just finished orientation for John and Michael, do you need us to come help you settle in?
I was just about to text back when my dad texted.
Father: Mary! You have to let her grow up! Let her do this herself! She's in high school now, she doesn't need you to baby her!
Mother: I know dear, I was simply letting her know that even though she is far away we are still here for her.
Father: She knows that Mary! Let her at least try to do this for herself!
I shook my head, a sad smile on my face, they had been arguing like this for the past week and it made me sad to think I won't hear them for a long time.
Me: I'm fine Mother, I'm heading to my dorm to get settled in.
I almost put my phone away when Dad texted me outside the group chat.
Father: I'm proud of you Wendy and I know you will do great in school, however should you need us...
I smiled and typed "Love you too Dad" before putting my phone away and heading to my dorm.
The inside of the dorm hall looked almost like a lobby in a hotel with marble flooring, leather couches, reception area and a little grocery store type shop. Standing at the reception desk was a plump older woman with a loving smile on her face.
"Are you, um, Mrs. Potts?" I asked her, walking up to the desk and she nodded.
"I am, and what's your name dear?"
"Wendy Darling" she typed and clicked a bit on the computer before nodding.
"Alright Miss Darling your all checked in, if you would just sign right here I can give you the key to your dorm room." She pushed a piece of paper at me and a pen, the paper had four names on it:
WENDY DARLING
ELSA
NANI PELEKAI
POCAHONTAS
"These are my roommates?" I asked Mrs. Potts as I signed the paper. Elsa and Nani had already signed.
"Yes, you each have your own room and a bathroom, but you share a living room/communal room and kitchen" she said. I pushed the paper and pen back towards her before saying," Can I just go?"
"Yes, your dorm is on the first floor to the left of the stairs, rooms have already been picked for you, you will find your name on the door." she said as she handed me my room key.
"Thank you" I said and took my suitcase to my dorm door, taking a deep breath I opened my door prepared to start my freshman year in high school.
