"Aman wake up. Who falls asleep on their prayer mat when they have a nice comfy bed? Wake up and shower" hajiya Zainab said jokingly
"But it's comfy here too" Aman whined.
It was 9am and Aman was not excited to be up this early on a Sunday. She valued her sleep and was not looking forward to going to Lagos so she slowly dragged her hijab over her legs.
"I'll send hajiya up fa, she's already here and we just had breakfast" hajiya Zainab teased further. Hajiya Ameena and Maryam had slept in the guest house that was provided for them inside the house, she always stayed there and refused to come into the house regardless of the never-ending offers Aman and Hajiya Zainab gave her.
"Okay okay maama, I'll have my shower now and come down" Aman whined as she got up feeling defeated.
After her warm and relaxing shower, Aman contemplated on what to wear... she kept thinking if she preferred getting dressed completely or waiting till she was about to leave. After careful thoughts, she slipped into a plain white oversized top and tights. "I'll wait till we're about to leave" she said, satisfied with herself as she put on a black turban to cover her hair.
When Aman went to the table, she met everyone chatting away and she instantly felt a lump in her throat because she realized how much she was going to miss each one of them.
"Salam, good morning everyone" she quietly said as she sat near hajiya Zainab.
"Ah'an are we expecting big baby Aman today?" Hajiya Zainab said rubbing Aman's back.
When Aman nodded in response, everyone laughed.
"Okay, what would you like to eat? We'll baby you" hajiya Zainab said.
"Hmm, hajiya. You spoil this girl too much, look at her younger ones acting older. Are you forgetting you're the oldest?" Hajiya Ameena said as she scolded Aman playfully.
Hajiya leave me and my baby" hajiya Zainab said as she served Aman some sautéed potatoes and eggs.
"Or do you want me to feed you since this is your last breakfast with us for the year?" Hajiya Zainab said and this time, Aman laughed as well.
"No thank you maama, I'll be okay" Aman replied.
After breakfast, they all sat in the living room talking about one thing or the other and at 12pm... Khaleefa stopped by to say bye to Aman but ended up staying longer than expected so before they knew what was happening, they were rushing to the airport to meet Alhaji Mohammed.Xxxx
LAGOS, NIGERIA
"I can't believe we're really here" Haleema said as they got into the car.
"If people see us, they'll think we're here for one big occasion" Aman replied, not as excited as her sister.
"Well this is an occasion for us ya Aman. We all love you so much, that's why we had to come with you" Maryam said as she sunk into the car seat.
After settling at their hotel, Alhaji Mohammed asked Aman to get ready. They were going to take her to Muneera's house so she could also get settled and they were going to have dinner with Dr Bilaal and Dr Zahra... Muneera's parents as well.
"Ai tun da muka zo ta kasa zama (since we arrived she's not be able to sit still) she's excited for us to take her to Muneera's house" Hajiya Ameena said as they all gathered in the lobby.
"Habba Ammi, it's not like that. I just don't want us to be late for dinner" Aman replied shyly but she was really eager to see her best friend. She felt like they hadn't met in over a year, all the calling and texting wasn't nearly enough.
"Toh, mu tafi (Alright, let's go)" Alhaji said as he got into a separate car with Fareeda and Hajiya Zainab while Hajiya Ameena, Aman, Haleema and Maryam got into another.
"This is all bittersweet for me" Aman said laying her head on her mother's lap.
"I feel happy that I'm going to be with Muneera, Mamiey and Abba again but I'm sad that I won't see you guys for a while and I'm very nervous about work." She further continued while hajiya Ameena listened carefully. She knew she was going to have this talk with Aman again.
Her daughter always acted so tough, she held everyone together and acted like she didn't really need anyone, she always worried about everybody else. Hajiya Ameena saw right through her and although she occasionally acted like a big baby, hajiya loved being her shoulder and backbone.
"It's bittersweet for us too Amani, kar ki damu (don't you worry), we're always a text, phone call or flight away. I don't think you'll even call us as much, you have your family here and I'm sure I have nothing to be worried about, Dr Zahra will take perfect care of you, your sister Muneera will make sure you always have someone to talk to if you feel lonely and we will be right here, cheering and supporting you. Work is always going to be annoying, but I told you, Sameer is not a bad person, he just has a lot going on. Make sure you learn from him and always remember that he is your boss and not your friend." Hajiya said as she rubbed her daughters head lightly.
"Thank you Ammi, I feel weights being lifted off my shoulders already." Aman said softly.
Aman knew how much she had been dragging about work but she couldn't stop thinking or talking about it. Sameer acted like he was doing her a favor, which in a way he was but she didn't understand why he had to be so mean and arrogant. Everyone kept reminding her that he's her boss, but does being mean come with the package as well? She always prayed that this was the right thing for her. At least I get to spend a year with Muneera she thought inwardly.
