Chapter 3

~Flashback~

We'd been stuck on the highway for four hours, waiting for some sign that things were better. Shane was in our car with Jason, looking for a radio broadcast and I was standing with Lori, Carl, Carol, Ed and Sophia. We'd just met this family and I didn't like Ed, he gave me that feeling. "Mom, I'm hungry." moaned Carl and I couldn't blame him. Carol offered an MRE but Ed quickly denied that. I walked over to our trunk and took out an MRE. "Here ya go sport." I said ruffling his hair, "thanks Aunt Kate." he said tearing into it. Lori smiled her thanks and I walked over to Shane. "You getting anything?" I asked peering in the passenger window, "no, the broadcasts have stopped." he replied. Jason was sitting in the passenger seat, playing with his action figures. "Are we safe from the monsters daddy?" Jason asked, Shane pulled him up into his lap and kissed the top of his head. "Bud, as long as I'm still breathing you and your momma are safe." Shane replied as Jason clung tightly to Shane's shirt. "But if you wear daddy's cap, you'll always be safe." Shane said placing his police cap on Jason's head.

"How?" asked Jason flipping the cap backwards so he could see, "because you've always got me with you because it's ma cap." Shane explained and Jason smiled. "I'm goin' go up ahead and scout it out." he said lifting Jason up on to his hip and walking round to me. "I'll come." I said following him over to Lori. He put Jason down beside Lori, "Lori can you watch him for a minute whilst me and Shane go see what's up ahead?" I asked. "Sure." she replied picking up Jason, "me and Daddy will be back in a minute, we're going to find someone who knows what's going on." I explained to Jason. "It's ok momma, I've always got you and daddy with me." he said pointing to his cap, I kissed the top of his head and followed Shane. We walked by a fight as we made our way through the sea of cars and people. "Do you think their turning people away?" I asked, "if they are, there will be a riot." replied Shane. "My main focus is getting you, Jason, Lori and Carl out of here." he said. We went down a ridge as helicopters flew over head towards Atlanta. We watched as explosions started going off in Atlanta, I couldn't believe it, the place of safety was getting blew up.

"Shane?" I said choking up, "come 'ere." he said pulling me into a hug. I began crying into his chest and he held me close. He rubbed my back and kissed the top of my head...

~ End of Flashback~

I woke with Jason in between me and Shane. I lay back down on my pillow, trying to steady my breathing. Shane clearly heard and got up. "Kate? What wrong?" he asked spinning round, "I just had a nightmare Shane, it was nothing." I replied holding back my tears. "Clearly it was something, your crying." he whispered. "We were on the highway waiting to get to the refugee center and we went to look ahead and then we saw..." I stopped and broke down into tears. Shane held me close with Jason, asleep, between us. "Your safe and so is he. That's all that matters and Rick's alive, baby." he said kissing my head. "Shane, are we safe?" I asked, Shane held me close to his chest and began shushing me. I calm down, Shane moved Jason and pulled me closer to him. "Your safe baby, no matter what I will protect you and my little boy."Shane said kissing my cheek. I drifted back off into a deep sleep but it lead to another flash back but this one was happier.

I looked at thirteen year old Rick, who was spying on our dad. "Face it bro, he's not doing anything interesting." I said, "he is Katy, jut wait." replied Rick keeping his focus on the shed. I blew him off and took a walk into the forest. "You got a problem with that, Walsh?" asked a voice, I walked towards the river and saw the local bullies. I couldn't see who they were bullying. "Y'all better put me down." a familiar voice shouted, I looked closer and saw Shane. He headbutted the bully and ran in my direction. We clashed and fell to the floor. "Katy? What are you doin' here?" he asked, "sightseeing Shane, I was taking a walk." I said pushing him off me. The bullies ran over, "awww, Shane's gotta girlfriend." one of them joked and Shane's face turned red. "Hey jackass, hows about you pick on someone your own size or just don't pick on anybody." I snapped and they laughed. I got mad and kicked one in the balls. His legs buckled and he fell to the ground, clutching his crotch. "Anyone else? I asked and the rest bolted.

Shane smiled as the other bully followed his friends. "Thanks Kate." Shane said rubbing the back of his head, "what'd ya do this time Walsh?" I ased with my hands on my hips. "Nothin', he started it." Shane huffed and I laughed. I nudged him, "come on, it was just a joke." I said and he smiled. We walked back to my house, Rick had given up spying on my dad and had decided to play socer instead. "Quick game Grimes?" Shane asked as we approached my brother, "hey Shane, sure. Kate your goalie." said Rick. "Nuh uh, you can." I snapped back and Rick stormed up to me. "Woah guys, I'll go in and you two can battle over the ball." Shane said pushing us away from each other. We nodded, our eyes still looked on each other. I looked at Shane and he flashed his bright white smile. I blushed causing Rick to chuckled so I tackled him to the ground...
