"mum, mr. kim and his wife are joining us. along with baek, auntie seoyun, junmyeon and yixing," jongdae told his mother when he found her, seeing the cart full with different types of popcorn, cookie dough, and such."oh, lovely! is seoyun here?" boyoung asked happily. baekhyun appeared with his mother.
"hey, auntie bo," baekhyun said, hugging jongdae's mother before moving so that the sisters could reunite.
"sis, you look stunning!" seoyun told boyoung.
"me? look at you, you're glowing!" boyoung laughed back, hugging her sister tightly, "i'm so happy you'll be joining us tonight, it's been how long since we last saw each other?"
"two years," seoyun smiled. jongdae cleared his throat.
"mum, auntie yunnie, baekhyun and i are gonna go grab some cereals and other stuff," jongdae, "mum, can i take the cart?"
"sure, honey, i'm gonna catch up with my sister," boyoung nodded at him. jongdae took the cart, hopping in it once he moved some junk food out of his way. baekhyun pushed it, leading him away from the mothers.
"so, spill the tea cause i know you have some," baekhyun told jongdae, going to the cereal aisle.
"my father is coming home for christmas, baek," jongdae sighed, "lucky charms."
"i gotchu," baekhyun nodded, grabbing a box and tossing it into the cart, "and what do you mean, uncle woobin is coming to the christmas party?"
"apparently," jongdae sighed, "which would be fine, if only i wasn't so freaking nervous."
"but i thought he was shooting a movie?" baekhyun asked.
"according to my mother, they decided it had been too long since we've all been together as a 'family'," jongdae said, using air quotes to get his sarcasm across.
"why aren't you happy? it's been what... seven years?"
"almost eight," jongdae said, "and i am happy, really. i don't know, baekkie, i'm just a brat. it's good but it's bad at the same time. good, obviously, cause i get to see my father who i haven't seen in forever."
"and bad why?" baekhyun asked jongdae.
"i mean... he doesn't really care about me, you know?" jongdae said, playing with his fingers, "he's just showing up to make my mom happy."
"how do you know he doesn't care?" baekhyun questioned, jongdae pointing to a box of fruit loops."
"he doesn't even call on my birthday, i seriously doubt he even knows it," jongdae said, "and it's not like i can tell my mum this, because it would just make her sad that he and i aren't close."
"i get it," baekhyun nodded, "how could you get excited over your father visiting when you think of him as actor kim woobin and not as your parent?"
"yeah, exactly," jongdae said, then groaning, "dear god, i'm so spoiled. this is gonna make my mum insanely happy and i'm over here being fussy."
"well, your mother can't relate. they live together. they see each other all of the time," baekhyun said, "meanwhile your father hasn't contacted you since you were nine. she couldn't possibly understand."
"yeah, i guess you're right," jongdae said, "i mean, what if he doesn't like me? i'm annoying and bratty, baek."
"you're funny and sweet, dae," baekhyun shook his head, "you're putting your mom before yourself. you're considerate. but hey, if you don't want to see him, i'm sure i can somehow figure out a way to get you out of there."
"no, that would defeat the purpose of him even coming," jongdae sighed, "just... just keep me distracted so i don't end up crying about how he's been absent basically my whole life and cause a scene."
"yeah, i got your back," baekhyun nodded, "coco puffs?"
"yup," jongdae nodded, "you wanna go get some chips?"
"yeah, your mum only got sweet stuff and popcorn," baekhyun said, pushing the cart, "oh, hey, go ahead and tell the others to go over to yours in a bit."
"yeah, i'll send it in the group chat," jongdae said, feeling a bit better now that he was able to rant, "thanks for putting up with me, baekhyun."
"you kidding? you're always there for me whenever i go through a bad breakup or have bad days, it's only fair i do the same for you," baekhyun winked at jongdae, "besides, if i didn't, who would?"
jongdae threw a box of popcorn at him, "you're so bitchy sometimes."
"love you," baekhyun said in a sing-song voice. jongdae smiled.
"love you more. now, i want hot cheetos," jongdae said, "to the chip aisle!"
"to the chip aisle!" baekhyun repeated, pushing the cart and jongdae to it. they stocked up, meeting jongdae's aunt and mother again. boyoung and seoyun paid for their things separately, jongdae still hanging out in the cart, legs hanging off of the side.
"ooh, the three stooges," seoyun smiled, "an accurate representation of baekhyun, jongdae, and yixing."
"wow, auntie, that's some serious shade you're throwing," jongdae laughed, "don't forget that mum tells me of all the dumb stuff you used to do when you were younger, like-"
"shh, my precious nephew," seoyun laughed nervously, hushing jongdae, "let's not get ahead of ourselves."
"ooh, dae, you've got to tell me what you're talking about later," baekhyun told jongdae. jongdae winked at him, raising a finger to his lips.
"alright, i'll see you both in... an hour?" boyoung said, jongdae still in the cart.
"sounds good, i need time to put all of our groceries away anyways," seoyun said, "i'll see you soon. baek, you gonna go with them?"
"yeah, jongdae and i have some secrets to spill," baekhyun nodded. seoyun frowned.
"on a second thought, i think i need you to help me load the groceries," seoyun said.
"boo," baekhyun sighed, looking to jongdae, "tell me later, yeah?"
"i gotchu," jongdae nodded, fist bumping his friend. seoyun and boyoung shared a look.
"perhaps we shouldn't have children the same age," boyoung said, the two laughing. jongdae and baekhyun rolled their eyes.
"jongdae, wanna spend the night tomorrow?" baekhyun asked his cousin.
"oof, can't, mum won't be here long. how about you come over?" jongdae said to him.
"sure," baekhyun nodded. the mothers looked to each other.
"aren't you boys forgetting something?" seoyun asked. baekhyun and jongdae frowned, patting their pockets.
"no, we have our phones," baekhyun said, "what, do you need us to go get something before you finish paying really quickly?"
"oh god, they're worse then we were," boyoung laughed, moving jongdae's hair out of his face.
"oh- oh! you want us to ask!" jongdae exclaimed, it clicking in his head. the mothers nodded. baekhyun frowned.
"why?" baekhyun asked, "we're always together."
"shh, you're about to get grounded," jongdae hissed at him, smiling at seoyun, "auntie yunnie, can baekkie stay over for the week?"
"how did one night turn into the week?"
"uh, ma," baekhyun said, "tonight is a sunday. meaning that tomorrow would be a monday. and if i'm staying over on a monday then what's the harm in the rest of the week? besides, it's christmas break, so it's not like we have school."
"i will never understand you boys," seoyun shook her head.
"that wasn't a no! i'll tell junmyeon to get a bag packed!" baekhyun exclaimed, already pulling out his phone to text the group chat, "yixing too, yeah?"
"duh. you can invite chanyeol over too," jongdae nodded.
"already was, jongdae, i already was."
