Early 1982

"Bye Linda, see you in the morning." Janie called to the receptionist as she made her way through the waiting room.

"Have a nice night dear, see you tomorrow!" the plump, older woman waved to her.

After zipping up her jacket, she pushed open the doors of the clinic and began her journey home. The cool winter evening air seemed to penetrate through her layers, leaving her shivering as she stood waiting for the bus.

Janie had been working at the clinic for nearly five months now. Her days were filled with check ups, administering shots, and running cultures to the lab to be tested. To her, it was menial work, but it paid decently, the hours were consistent, and she only had to work every other Saturday.

Originally, when she'd been searching for nursing jobs after finding out she'd passed her boards, she'd been looking for hospital jobs. The entire reason she'd wanted to become a nurse was to work in an emergency room, to help save people's lives just as her's had been nearly six years prior. But alas, the hospitals close enough for her to take the bus to had either not been hiring, or had been looking for nurses with more experience. So for now, she was content to spend her days looking in people's ears and checking their blood pressure.

The bus came to a halt at Sunset & Clark, and Janie made the short walk up the street to the apartment. The boys were sitting in the living room, eating grilled cheese sandwiches when she came in.

"Hey Janie." Tommy and Vince muttered through mouthfuls of food.

"Hey Punk, you hungry?" Nikki asked, standing up.

She nodded, slipping off her red chucks.

"Want me to make you one?"

Again she nodded, stretching her arms over her head.

"I'm gonna go change." she mentioned, heading towards the bedroom.

After slipping out of her scrubs, and into a pair of sweatpants & one of Nikki's shirts, Janie reemerged from the bedroom to find a grilled cheese sitting for her on the end table.

"Thanks babe." she gratefully told Nikki.

Sitting herself down next to him on the couch, she ravenously devoured the sandwich. It had been a long day. No, it had been a long week. She was tired, and her entire body ached. Janie hoped she wasn't coming down with something. They were, after all, right in the middle of flu season.

"How was work Janes?" Tommy handed her a beer.

"My first patient of the day threw up on me." Janie massaged her temples before taking a drink.

"Oh gross!" Tommy gagged.

"Janie, you look rough." Nikki placed a hand on her back.

"I feel rough. I think I'm gonna stay in tonight." she responded.

"Aw," Tommy groaned, "but it's your Saturday off! How're you supposed to go on a weekend bender with me if you don't come out tonight?"

Janie laughed at Tommy, who was now pouting at her.

"Tommy I promise I'll come out tomorrow and I'll still drink your ass under the table, deal?" she grinned.

"One of these days I'll be able to out drink you!" he shot back playfully.

"You wish." Vince joked under his breath.

"What'd you say you little blonde bitch?" Tommy jumped on Vince, putting him in a headlock.
