April 1978
Nikki made his way out of the club, lighting up a cigarette as he walked down the street. It was eerily quiet, not many people came out on Wednesday nights. The sky was clear, and a light breeze moved through the spring evening. One could almost say the Sunset Strip was peaceful tonight.
Taking a long drag, he zipped up his leather jacket to combat the chilly night. He was about a mile from his apartment when a scream pulled him from his thoughts.
"Let me go you fucking prick!" a female voice cut through the night air.
Nikki stopped as he tried to determine the source of the noise. When a second scream pierced his ears, he flicked his cigarette away and followed it down a nearby alley.
Once his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he saw a young woman being held against a wall by a man nearly twice her size. As Nikki got closer, he noticed the girl's shirt was torn open, exposing her bra.
"Is there a problem here?" Nikki asked, coming right up behind the two of them.
The man, surprised by the intrusion turned around to see him.
"Problem? No problems here.." he slurred.
He was clearly drunk off his ass. Nikki could see the sheer terror in the girl's eyes.
"Kind of looks like a problem to me." Nikki mentioned, inching closer.
"Please help I-" she cried out shakily.
The man covered her mouth, "Listen pal, why don't you beat it. Leave the lady and I to our business."
Nikki scowled, pulling the switchblade from his pocket, he pressed it to the jerk's back.
"Why don't you let the lady go, and I'll let your guts stay inside your body." Nikki seethed.
"Whoa, hey man I don't want any trouble." the drunk turned back to him once more.
"Let. Her. Go."
"S-sure thing man." he released the girl, and Nikki stepped between the two of them.
"Beat it." Nikki spat, still extending his knife towards the man.
When he'd finally disappeared from sight, Nikki turned back towards the girl. She was spooked, bad. Her arms were wrapped tightly around her torso in an attempt to cover her torn shirt. Her legs shook so violently it was a wonder she was standing upright.
"You okay?" Nikki asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.
She nodded, the tears that fell from her eyes seemed to almost gleam in the moonlight.
"Th-thank you." she whispered.
"No problem." Nikki replied, stuffing his switchblade back in his pocket.
He felt bad, the girl seemed pretty shaken up. She didn't look that old either, he had to wonder what she was doing out on the strip this late at night by herself.
"Where do you live? I'll walk you home." he offered.
She stayed silent, tears continuing to stream down her face.
