Gabby woke to the sound of a murmuring voice. Micky was speaking quietly into the phone. From Micky's side of the conversation and the lingo he was using, she could tell he was speaking with his temporary AA sponsor. He was filling him in about the previous day's drama and apologizing for not checking in the day before.
"Sorry, Colin, but yesterday was off-the-charts, bat shit crazy. I should have taken a moment to call you, but I when I wasn't rehearsing I was watching over Gabby and sometimes it was simultaneous. I honestly was terrified I was going to lose Gabby to her psychological demons and I didn't want her ending up in a psych ward in a foreign country if that happened. She's got serious trauma from things in her past and it all got triggered by this crazy bitch who works on stage crew who I told you about, the one who came onto me. She got it into her head that the hitch with me not hooking up with her was that she hadn't invited Gabby to join us. So she came on to Gabby and spooked her and then she forced her way into my dressing room and she literally molested her. No, I'm telling you, she grabbed her tits and tried to kiss her and then she grabbed me and started feeling me up!
"Well, it went from bad to worse. Then Davy got in on the act, trying to pretend he was all concerned about Gabby when he's the one set the whole thing in motion. Yeah, he had the nerve to come on to her right in front of me, trying to throw himself at her feet. Okay, well, no, that's not really what he was doing, but in the moment that's what it felt like. He was pretending he was sorry, but it was like he was still trying to manipulate her and claim her and steal her away from me.
"It's not just me, Colin! Gabby feels the same way! No, I'm not trying to tell Gabby what to feel or influence her. Believe me, if you met her, you'd know she's her own person and she makes up her own mind on things. If it were up to me, I'd have banned her from having anything to do with him ages ago. But instead, I've been very tolerant and forgiving. I've given him so many chances to make amends and clean up his act. But he's threatening her sanity at this point.
"Colin, she's a rape survivor, and it was a boyfriend who manipulated her and abused her. She still has panic attacks. Massive ones. I don't coddle her. I respect her boundaries and limitations. Yeah, she said she wants to work on overcoming the anxiety and panic and she's already been seeing a shrink but that she's going to step it up when she gets home. No, I didn't tell her she couldn't see Davy, though I did strongly advise her against it. No, I didn't say anything to her or him that wasn't true. I didn't judge him unfairly. I wasn't selfish or resentful or dishonest. I was protecting my loved one. Yeah, okay, so that's the inventory of everything that went down yesterday, apart from the comfort each other sex which you don't get to hear about. So you think I'm cool, I don't owe any amends? Okay, thanks.
"It's not that I don't have sympathy for the guy, even as I'm extremely pissed at him, and I do think he's operating on evil motivations right now. But I'm going to fight to protect her. I don't think I need to be a chump just because I'm in recovery. I'm going to be professional and courteous to him. No, I won't talk shit about him, not even to Gabby. Yeah, we talked about that. She wanted to know who if any of our circle of friends we should tell, particularly if we can find one of them to support him and avoid telling anyone who would make things difficult for him, and I said I'd leave that to her but that I was going to stay out of it. Yeah, no gossip. Right, keep my side of the street clean. Though I have to admit, part of me wants him to have to go through the same humiliation and hell I had to go through with our circle when I became a drunk and shamed everyone and had to make amends. But like I said to Gabby, we're not his Higher Power, and it's not our place to judge him or save him. She's going to tell one of our friends who's over here now on this trip with whom he's especially close so she can help him, and she'll also give a heads up to the wife who's leaving him to warn her for her own safety. You think that's okay? Okay, thanks, I'll tell her.
