"This is your mate?" One elder, a female Nephilim with long silver hair, questioned as she peered skeptically at Crowley and I.
"He is, elder." I replied respectfully, tucking my wings neatly behind me.
"This must be some serpent's trick." Another elder, a male with wings as white as snow, retorted, "Some way to recruit this clan to their side."
"Trust me," Crowley spoke up in an unamused tone, "This was not my doing. I was just sent up above to stir up trouble. The last thing I had in mind was to bloody well get myself bound to some wild animal." He held up his wrist to show off the snake tattooed on his wrist. I shot him a dirty look. Wild animal, was I?
"Besides," He carried on, "Down below is not too please at my...how did they put it? Ah, yes, fraternizing. That was the word. In fact, they sent two dukes of Hell to fetch me back, but this one," He gestured towards me, "Bound them and shredded them to bits." The elders eyes turned to me.
"I did," I confessed, straightening my shoulders. It wasn't even something our warriors could brag about. I had defeated two dukes of Hell.
"And you claimed him as your mate." Another elder, an ancient tatted warrior, said.
"I did." I repeated.
"A mating bond does not guarantee admittance," The silver haired female said, "Nor does it even guarantee a trial for entrance." My breath hitched in my throat. They weren't even going to allow him a trial? Taking a deep breath, I played the last card available.
"Clan law states..." I said, but was immediately cut off.
"We know the clan law," An elder snapped.
"Then you will know that a mate, no matter linage, has the right to trial if it is in the interest of family preservation." I finished. The elders remained silent for a long moment.
Finally the warrior elder spoke up, leaning forward, "And what family preservation do you claim?" I glanced at Crowley, who looked beyond confused. This is not how I wanted to tell him. But now, I had no choice.
Taking a shuddering breath, I said, "I am the mate of the Serpent of Eden, and I am carrying his child."
