Anna,"Good morning Mr John,"the whole class chorused on their feet.
"Good morning students sit down." He said with a frown. Then he started the speech all teachers give at the beginning of each term."This is a new chance for you all to change..." Blah blah blah.
I wasn't feeling comfortable because I could feel all eyes on me. It felt awkward for me to even raise my head up. People whispered all around me.
"We have a new student in our midst, please introduce yourself."
"Uhh my name is Anna Okolie. I'm 16 years old and I'm new here as everyone knows...I uh..."
"That will be enough Anna, have your seat."
"Thanks."
"Since we just started this term we're going to start with revision. So please open your math textbook to page eighty six lets remind ourselves on indices," and the whole class grumbled and i did too silently. I hated math.
"The first law of indices..."
***********
The bell went off for the beginning of short break, everyone ran out of the class to God knows where. I remained on my sit. The dark boy beside me did too, I decided to start conversation
"Hi" I smiled at him.
"Hi, I'm Boma." He smiled back.
"I like the name." He mumbled something which I guess was thanks .
Weird.
The bell went off signalling the end of short break and everyone was back in the class in a minute.
A girl walked up to me with a genuine smile. "Hi Anna."
I smiled too."Hi."
" I'm Rebecca. So are you new around too?"
" Not really, I've been living around for a few months now."
"Oh" she said.
"Yeah."
" You made a mistake choosing this school."
"How?" I asked curiously.
"The fine boys are few."
I laughed very hard."Seriously?"
" I'm not looking for a fine boy anyways."
Who isn't?"
"Me."
"I hear," she whispered but I heard.
"Do you have a boyfriend?" I found myself asking.
"Yes, he's in ss3. The disciplinary prefect of the school."
"Cool I've only had one boyfriend, if one month dating can be counted." She laughed at what I said and was about to say something when a petit lady entered the class.
"We'll continue this conversation during long break." Rebecca said before heading to her seat.
The woman was our literature teacher. Literature was my favorite subject and I enjoyed the class. All the teachers kept telling me to copy first term's note and I nodded to them all.
Not like I would.
When I heard the bell for long break I grew nervous but Rebecca held my hand which gave me confidence. We entered the hall and all heads turned to me. I just smiled. Some smiled back, some eyed me but I kept smiling.
