Eli

The rain stayed but the boys did not as they made their way downtown to escape the storm that was brewing in the sky. They passed the bridge, stopping once to watch how the rain drops created circles in the water below and then began to walk once more, both of them not speaking. They were greeted with radiance as they opened the door of a restaurant. The lobby was full of people waiting the storm out, some people smoking, some sitting on the floor scrolling through their phones. Hudson scrunched up his nose in distaste at the lobby that was fogged up with smoke, but Eli breathed it in, not knowing anything different.
Hudson and Eli pushed their way through the flock of people and managed to get a booth in the back. The room itself was dim but the lights were a glowing marigold which gave a nice ambience. The booth they sat at was big enough for quite a few people and the leather of the seats were torn, but comfy. "Do you want anything to eat?" Hudson asked as he glanced down at the menu that was placed in front of him.
"Did you bring money?" Eli asked, keeping his hands folded neatly in his lap. Hudson smiled and dug around in his pocket and pulled out some cash.
"I always carry money around with me, plus I have my card on me." Hudson informed with a cheeky smile and Eli nodded.
"Hi, what can I get you two—Hudson?" A girls voice chirped up as she swiftly walked over to them with a pad of paper and a pen. Hudson looked up and recognized her slightly, not knowing her name but knowing she went to school with them.
"Oh, hi." Hudson said. He didn't want to hurt her feelings by making it obvious that he had no idea what her name was.
"It's been a while, hasn't it?" She sighed and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
Eli watched the two of them converse, his eyes never leaving Hudson's face. Hudson had a split second where he furrowed his eyebrows before smiling.
"Yeah, how long has it been?" He asked, trying to keep the conversation going but not giving out his cluelessness.
"Probably not since Jeremy's party a few months ago." She blushed slightly and Hudson did too once he realized when they had met.
"Yeah...well, umm, I'll have a root beer and he'll have a Dr. Pepper." Hudson said quickly.
She seemed sad for a moment when she realized that Hudson wanted to be done talking and she promltly jotted their beverage order down on her notepad and turned on her heel with so much torque that her hair whipped around.
The boys were quiet and Hudson kept his eyes down at the table. He observed the swirly patterns in the honey colored wood, tracing the lines with his forefinger.
"Are you going to explain what that was all about?" Eli asked, waving his hand around.
Hudson sighed, knowing that he should probably tell him, especially since he was there and just saw how awkward everything was. "A few months ago Jeremy and some of our friends had to help get that girl into a bedroom." Hudson explained, his face etched with remorse.
