"We are sorry, Sarah. We just need new hardworking employees. You seem to have lost your magical touch and we don't see the need to still have you here. I am really sorry," said Natasha on her way out of my office. She really looked sorry.
Sarah knew that anyone in her place would've just lost it and started crying non stop for having just lost an amazing position in a famous, worldwide newspaper.
But she didn't. She didn't cry. She wasn't mad either.
After all, losing a job is just a minor thing when you have lost the only person of your family left and your most favorite one as well.Sarah just lost her sister, Rose. Rose was battling with cancer for years but, unfortunately she lost the battle. Rose was the only person of Sarah's family left. Her parents died when she was just 3 in a car accident and she considered Rose as her family.
She walked out of the door with her stuff in her hands, knowing that this is the last time to see this place ever again. She went to her car knowing that this is also going to be probably the last time to ever drive a car. She was on her way home when she realized that she doesn't have anything at home to eat (not that she was gonna cook or anything). She turned around and went to a nearby Chinese restaurant.
She sat down waiting for her order when she realized that the man sitting just across from her was Levi Hudson, her college roommate. She decided not to embarrass herself by going and saying hi as he probably won't even remember her. She took out her earphones and blasted on her favorite songs. She tried to enjoy the songs as much as possible as in her head, She was certain this was gonna be the last time for her to listen to them or any other song.
Just as she was about to leave she heard someone calling her. She prayed that she must have mistaken this but unfortunately for her, "Sarah? Sarah Stiles? Is it you? " She nodded in agreement although in her head all she wanted to say was "NO IT IS NOT ME!" but she really was. "OMG hi, how are you? I miss you so bad!" he shrieked and pulled her in a strong long hug. She was surprised by the embrace but she hugged him back. "Guys, this is Sarah, my college roommate. Sarah, these are Carol and John," he introduced them all to each other. She nodded to them and they all hi-ed and hello-ed her back with warm smiles. "Come sit with us. We need a fourth friend as I won't third wheel these suckers for a long time!" he said and they flipped him off. "No, I really should get going, it was nice meeting you though," said Sarah, her voice cracking in the middle. It was obvious that she was crying not a long time ago, yet thankfully nobody asked her anything. "I don't take 'no' as an answer though, so you don't have a choice" said Levi while pulling a chair for Sarah to sit down. "Great! Now I have to sit down for a couple more hours! This day really can't get any worse!" thought Sarah.
"I was just telling the guys about how much fun I had in college and it was ALL thanks to you!" said Levi obviously over exaggerating. She just smiled, she didn't feel like talking anymore these days.
"So Sarah, how's life? and how is Howard? and your sister, Rosanna right?" asked Levi, suddenly interested in every single detail of her life.
"Yep, that's how this day is getting worse and worse by the time" complained Sarah, obviously to herself.
"hmm, me and Howard broke up 6 months ago and actually its not Rosanna its Rose and she died a month ago," said Sarah quietly, trying to push back her tears.
All the smiles on their faces fell down. It was suddenly awkward, especially for Levi. "I'm so sorry for your loss, I really didn't know. But, may I ask how.. you know-?"
"she died? Cancer. She had Leukemia and she had been suffering from it for 3 years before she was finally relieved" she completed for him his last sentence. She always did that, its like its hard for people to say it but to her is easier. "I'm really sorry, she was amazing!" he said with worry filling him up.
"So Sarah, what do you do for a living? I'm a midwife and John here is an accountant. I don't have to tell you that Levi is a college professor cause of course you already know," said Carol lightly trying to change the subject.
"I actually didn't know that. I used to be an editor-in-chief in a newspaper but I was just fired 2 hours ago" she tried to sound like it was okay but of course it didn't seem a bit like it. Their faces fell down again, they were certain that nothing could go wrong in a conversation about their jobs. Little did they know.
"Oh man, you must be going through a hard day" said John. He had an irish accent. She wanted to correct him and tell him that this wasn't just a hard day but in fact a hard life, but she didn't.
The rest of the day was pretty smooth, they all did a lot of talking except Sarah of course, who did the least of talking. She daydreamed of a time where she bumped in Levi with her sister with her and they were just finishing some gossiping to do. She would've been genuinely happy and would've enjoyed this a lot. Unlike now, where she's just counting down to when she finally goes home and end all of this.
"So Sarah, give me your phone number so we can hangout more, all of us. I really enjoyed this," said Levi while he was putting on his coat. It was a typical, rainy January night so they all had to wear coats. She gave Levi her number although she knew that he won't have the time to call her to set up anything. She said goodbye to all of them and drove home.
She sat on her couch with a blanket and a hot chocolate in her hand. She opened the TV and started watching Friends for the millionth time.It was time. She knew it. She decided to first write a letter with why she did this and all of that. She never in a million years thought she'd do that. She always imagined for herself to have a happy life with her long time boyfriend, Howard, now married and with 2 children running around. The children would've loved their cool aunt Rose and always talked about the cool adventures she and their mom did. Tears started running down her cheek unwelcomed but she was used to this by now. She decided to enjoy her last time of watching her favorite series and finish up her mug of hot chocolate first before doing it all. She didn't realize it as she fell fast asleep on the couch.
