Cinnamon Treat

James grabbed his treat out of the little brown sack he had from the market with his little curious hands. He pulled out a small pastry with cinnamon swirled through the flaky dough. Sugar was rare anymore, so him having a treat was nothing to brush off. The small pastry costed Petra a pretty coin, but James earned it through hard work and assistance at home. The pastry didn't have icing like one would imagine a flaky cinnamon treat having today. The only flavor it had that wasn't dough was the light cinnamon inside. He opened his mouth and bit into it with his little teeth, with one tooth missing on the left side of the roof of his mouth. A sense of comfort flowed through him as his tastebuds touched the cinnamon and buttery flakes of the treat. His copper brown eyes rolled back in delight of what he bit in to. His tongue slid across his lips before he took another bite, savoring every second of it.

His father watched him slowly devour it while Sophie drifted to sleep in her mother's arms. Levi has done everything in his power to ensure that his son lived a life he never had as a boy. He swore to himself that he would never let his children starve, and kill for food and money like he did at his sons age. Cursed memories festered in his mind from his childhood, like a dwelling regret that never leaves, or a festered wound. He always feared the thought of Petra dying from a disease like his mother, leaving them with no mother like he had. One thing was for sure, the children would know their father, unlike him. But even then, he knew his life wasn't promised either, knowing full well that he could die any time he stepped food outside, or the Titans coming to them, which happened from time to time. He made sure that Levi would never widow his wife, but life never promises his luck. The scar cross his face is proof of dwindling pure luck after the attack less than a year ago, before Sophie was born. A group of Military Police brats thought that it would be smart to have a bit of fun and mess with the Scouting Legion, killing more than a hand full of Commander Erwin and Captain Levi's soldiers on the field against the enemy.

His wife placed her hand on Levi's hand, snapping him back into reality from his thoughts. "What's making you ponder dear?" She rubbed his rough hand with her soft thumb.

"Sorry." He let out a soft sigh and rubbed his forehead. "It's nothing and I should be heading back to my post." He pushed himself foreword and stood up before kissing her freckled cheek and ruffled James head of thick hair, making his way back out the door. "I'll be back for dinner." He slid his slim fingers around the knob and turned it until there was a soft click, indicating that he could open it to head back. With a push, he opened the door and headed out to his post.
