The next morning I woke in Tristen’s bed, my book was closed beside me and my feet were tucked under a blanket I didn’t know was there. I roam the house for her and she’s nowhere to be found. With time to spare before work I decide on unpacking the rest of my room.
“Hi, Daddy.” I say excitedly to my father over the phone.
“Hey, baby girl. How do you like everything? When can we visit?” My dad was holding the phone but in the background my brothers and my mom were directing the conversation, Dad was relaying the messages.
“It’s pretty Dad, you can visit once classes actually start I’m not ready for you guys to see everything yet.
“Did you get furniture?”
“For my room, yes..”
“Give me the phone. Rubben let me talk to her.” I heard my mom take the phone away. “Hi baby.” She sounded happy but also like she was crying, I forced back tears.
“Hi Mom.” I smiled and the tears fell.
I spent what felt like hours on the phone with my mom,
“Ry, when are you coming home? Nick says you’re going to be gone for a long time” My five year old brothers’ breathing was heavy.
“Nicks a loser, Noah. I’ll see you soon I promise.”
“Nick, Ry said you’re a loser and she’s not going to be gone long.”
I hear my older brother mumble under his breath, and it makes my family laugh.
“I have to go to work, Noah. I love you.” I blew him a kiss through the phone.
“No, no no” He began to cry and it broke my heart. My family took turns saying good bye while they coaxed him away from the phone.
