Megan

Oh My God.

It's red brick! My dormitory building is made entirely of red bricks! It looks magnificent! I love red-brick structures! Truth be told, I prefer this over cement-coated buildings.

Before I can enter the premises, I spot a man selling various items spread out on a mobile-kiosk: Hair clips and other neon-colored accessories, macrame bracelets, religious necklaces, cute beanies.. and cellphones!

Thank God! I hurry over, only to realize I don't have my wallet about my person. It's in the front pocket of my favorite pale pink satchel.. along with my lost set of luggage. DARN IT!

"Got a problem?" says a female voice behind me.

My heart jolts in shock. I turn around to notice a spectacular black girl, about eight feet tall, with sleek, chin-length black hair, and exquisite yellow sweater and pale blue jeans ending in calfskin leather boots. She looks around my age, but who knows?

I blink twice, my brown eyes gaping at her beauty. I put on brown contact lenses a few minutes ago. I want to make sure no one recognizes me. Yellow eyes are rare, and it'll only be a matter of time before someone figures out I'm a Young if I don't conceal my bright, distinctive eyes.

"W-well.. I... Uh.. I.. Um.." I look down, wringing my fingers nervously.

"Good God," says a random passerby in high heels. "Just spit it out."

"I-I.. don't h-have my wallet.. And my phone.. got stolen.."

"You can borrow mine," she says, making me look up in surprise.

"W-what?" I gawk at her.

She shows me an affable smile. "You can use mine to call someone," she says amiably.

"Oh.." The stranger proffers her phone, and when I hesitate, she places it on my palm. "T-thank.. Thank you," I manage to say, clutching it carefully in my hands. "You're very kind."

"No problem." She smiles again. "You're not from around here, are you?"

I shake my head. "I lived in the Philippines."

"Past tense?" she asks.

Nodding, I release a weary sigh. "I needed to get away. That's what I'm good at: Running from my problems instead of facing them."

"Well, everyone needs a fresh start." She glances at her phone in my hand. "So, who are you gonna call?"

"O-oh.. right." I press my lips together pensively. I can think of two people to contact: Britney and Patricia. In the end, I jab the former's number, then press the green Call button.

After the second ring.. "Who the hell is this?"

"Nee, it's Megan. I'm in New--"

"MEGAN?! I missed you! And your cooking, but that's another story. How are you, girl?"

"Could be better. Could be worse. I'm in New York--"

"NEW YORK?" she interrupts for the second time. "WHAT THE HELL? And I'm just finding out NOW? I'm your best friend! This is because of that Tessa, isn't it? Has she replaced me? What's that noise? Is it raining over there?"

"Yes, it's raining," I answer quickly. "Nee, listen. I got mugged--"

"YOU GOT MUGGED?!" she explodes. "Do you remember what the person's face looks like?! I will personally hunt him or her down--"

"Britney, please!!" I wash a hand along my fat face, exasperated. "I have no phone, money, or clothes," I say hastily before she can cut in. "My luggage got misplaced, including my wallet. A nice girl lent me her phone for a moment."
