Audrey

Audrey: I love autumn. It 'wins you over with its mute appeal to sympathy for its decay.'

RM: Excuse me?

Chatting. We've been doing it a lot these days, even on the weekdays when I'm not at B.H.E. Headquarters. At first, he initiated the first random message, but as time passes, I've been, more or less, starting the spontaneous private conversations.

And the unpredictability is fun, too. My phone would buzz whenever I'm in the most likely places: On my way to class, or in the middle of a dull lecture.. when I'm in the shower.. or about to fall asleep.. and once, during gym class, I dodged the red rubber ball in time to dash for my ringing phone tucked in the side pocket of my orange duffel bag.

Audrey: I was talking about autumn.

RM: I got that. I'm just trying to understand what you said.

Audrey: Not me. Robert Browning. Well, sort of. I might have gotten a few words wrong here and there. He was an English poet.

RM: I didn't know you read poetry.

Audrey: I love poetry. I may have hated high school, but I always enjoyed my literature classes. World lit, Classic lit, Asian lit, you name it.

RM: I'm not surprised. You seem to be good with words :)

Smiley faces. He sent many, and I have a strong feeling that as he types them, he's genuinely smiling at his phone's screen.

RM: I don't think I've ever met anyone who likes school.

Audrey: Well, I'm sure there's a number of people who are fond of it.

RM: But not you.

Audrey: No.

RM: May I ask why?

Audrey: I want to tell you in person, but I'll tell you this much: I was a total nerd.

RM: Nerd or geek?

Audrey: What's the difference?

RM: They're used interchangeably, as if they mean the same thing, but they don't. A geek is an enthusiast of a particular topic or field. A nerd is a studious intellectual, although again of a particular topic or field.

Audrey: You are such a..

RM: Dork, I know.

Audrey: But chicks dig that.

RM: Socially inept rich kid with an enormous sense of self-entitlement? Yeah, that gets all the ladies.

Audrey: Don't sell yourself short. You're a good person. Anyone would feel lucky to be with you.

RM: Sure.

Audrey: I'm serious.

RM: :)

Okay, this time, I know he's not smiling in real life.

Audrey: Listen to me. One day, you'll meet a girl. And ultimately, she's going to find out how you chew, how you sip, how you dance, how you smell at every point of the day.

How your face looks underneath your makeup. How you love chocolate. How you can be hyper at times, how certain games and songs and shows make you happy. How cranky you get when you're tired. How you think you look bad in all your F.B. photos. She's going to know everything about you. And you know what? She's still going to love you.

RM: You're amazing.

Audrey: We both are.

RM: I have to go. Recording session.
